Will a new ps3 last longer than an old on? Then surely the answer will be yes.Justinps2hero

This makes sense due to age. But I still want to know if their is a fatal coherent design flaw in the fat models.. or is it just because their older? We're adults and take care of things. I mean I still have my Sega Genesis and play it from time to time. 2006 isn't old IMO. Not old enough for consoles to have problems.

It seems like the bigger models would offer better cooling. I wonder if those getting YLOD are running their PS3s for hours on end. I don't usually do that for anything so assuming I used a fat model for a reasonable time and kept it in a cool environment.. could it potentially last as long as a slim? That's all I need to know.

Rubbish, they are just older, they have move miles on the clock. All these Slims will have a similar life pattern.Justinps2hero

Didn't you tell me not to get it if reliability was a concern? One thing to note is that I know the guy that has it and he takes care of stuff, and he bought it new. So would that change your opinion?

I thought PS3 was supposed to be the most reliable so it's interesting to hear of so much speak of YLOD. The main reason why I ask is because I can trade my slim for a metal gear gunmetal PS3. This is the fat model and I've always wanted it. I've already tested it and it looks and plays beautifully, but I also buy systems with hopes to play them years down the road so if it's a timebomb then I'll just have to pass on it.

It's interesting how some say the newer models look ugly and original owners pride themselves of their big toy. That's kinda how I feel and now I want a fat model so why not get a sweet looking one? So I just need to know if theoretically both the fat and slim models have equal potential to YLOD or kick the bucket, or is this more prone to fat models?

I wouldn't. If reliability is important to you, you're better off with the newer of the two units. Fasure.Justinps2hero

Dang that kinda sucks. I think the Metal Gear fat model is pretty sweet looking and would help my OCD since it's not shiny. Is the Ylod thing sorta guaranteed like RRod? I thought PS3's were known to "not break down". So it's interesting to discover this after so much fuss over RROD but if it is what it is then I'll have to keep my slim. Anyone else? Would you trade your slim for a gunmetal metal gear fat model in near mint condition from someone you knew?

Here's a question for ya.. my friend wants to trade me his gunmetal PS3 for my slim w/ Uncharted 3. He just wants a new slim model and he's a videophile so he wants the lossless audio or whatever, plus he knows I've drooled over his for awhile. Anyway I know his is in perfect shape but I don't know much about the fat models. Are they prone to this ylod you guys keep speaking about? I mean I don't want to swap it and then it die on me in 2 years... or even 5 years. I really do want to trade him but not if mine is more reliable. I'd probably swap out the 40gb drive for a 500 7200rpm WD Scorio hd and be set. He still has the box even.

But above all I care about reliability more so than the collector's value of it. I wanna play it years down the road.

I'll keep my eye out. If you weren't in Norway I'd consider selling you one of my FW900s. Next to the Sony 21" F520.. the FW900 is probably greatest CRT monitor for gaming purposes. 24" and more ansi-contrast than my 34XBR960. Heck, even blu-ray ISOs look unreal on it. There is no motion judder so video is smooth as butter. Of course I'd love to have that 4K setup but I just don't have a dedicated room for it. I'll have to be a mere peasant and settle for a TV. lol But wow that does sound nice.
