Applying thermal paste is easy but i think follow 2 schools of thought-either apply a glob of paste to the centre of the cpu and use something like a credit card to smooth it evenly along the surface, or my favourite, splurge a lot of paste around the centre the chip and rely on the cpu cooler to squeeze it all round the chip when you install the cooler.

Also, do not spread it! This is someething many people do, but it can create small air pockets within the grease and you will not obtain a good contact. It shouldn't make a huge difference, but this is not what you should be doing unless you are tinting. Always let the cooler spread the thermal grease. A small (size of a pea perhaps) dab in the middle is the easiest (and sometimes best) way to apply the paste. The CPU actually has a concave surface if you look at it. The cooler actually makes most of the contact in a relatively small area around the centre.
