I did a research of an item and it says that i am now allowed to pick up and use an aliens weapon in a figt, how do i do that? And does my soldier keep it after the fight?

Do you only lose the weapon or alien alloys if you kill the alien with a grenade/Rocket or as soon as you use it on an alien its gone?
