Front Mission. Last two games, Evolution and Left Alive are nothing like its first 5 installments.

Final Fantasy series should have die after 12th one.

CoD game should have die after third one but instead it was rebooted and modernized as Modern Warfare in 2007. This is also where the shit hits the fan.

I also wished that Persona series dies after Scramble as I'm afraid Atlus might take similar path to Square-Enix of milking the franchise.

Sometimes developers and publishers, not just gamers can be blame as well. For example Tetsuya Nomura waited more than 20 years to reboot(no just remake) Final Fantasy VII because he hates the 1997 classic, especially in gameplay department. I believe some of the lower-ranking developers in Square-Enix still wants to make newer FF games with turn-based gameplay but with someone like Nomura in charge, they don't have any choices. This also explain why some other games like Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default may began their lives as cancelled and discarded ideas for newer FF games.

Back to topic I think "newer gamers hate classic" issue is not new. Back then in mid 2000s, many people of that time hated some PS1 classics such as Front Mission 3 and Final Fantasy IX because of their graphics and gameplay.

Today some gamers hate fast-paced action RPGs like Fable and Kingdom of Amalur as they preferred slower-paced Soulsborne clones instead.

I hope some of the Sim games like Simfarm, Simtown and Simisle may have sequels but sadly their creators Will Wright no longer active in the industry anymore.

Front Mission 6

You earn my respect, my friend because you are the only person in this thread to mention it besides myself. Sadly it will not going to happen anytime soon due to lack of demand and more importantly Square-Enix's current attitude towards turn-based games in general. Screw Square-Enix.

So this is the end of Trails of Cold Steel quadrilogy. I'm glad that we don't have to wait for 2-3 years to be translated again.

Older Call of Duty actually plays like a video games while its recent incarnations(post Modern Warfare and beyond) feels more like glorified interactive movies than actual video games.

I always prefer classics over the modern ones and I think the best era of video games for me is the late 90s to mid 2000s, PS1, PS2 and early PS3 era. Many of the games in this era such as Suikoden, Wild Arms, Enchanted Arms, older Call of Duty, older Medal of Honor etc. no longer exists or at least went radical changes(Final Fantasy for example).

Call of Duty officially dead after it was "modernized" in 2007 as Modern Warfare. Some franchise like Final Fantasy and Sakura Wars changed from turn-based JRPGs into real-time hack-and-slash in order to cater newer generation of gamers, especially western ones. Final Fantasy VII was one of the iconic game ever made but unfortunately the remake turns it into a generic action game.

Earlier of this month when the gameplay of Baldur's Gate 3 was shown, the overall reactions are mostly negative. While not surprising, given that it uses the same engine as Divinity games before but most people are disgusted with it and decided to boycott the game and its developer Larian Studios as two previous BG games aren't turn-based. Some went far as labeling all turn-based games as irrelevant and "outdated".

While I don't think any turn-based games or any genres are outdated but I can understand the situation. Some games with TB roots have abandoned it such as Final Fantasy XV, Front Mission and New Sakura Wars in order to appeal newer generations of gamers. Although the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake will have turn-based mode but it nothing to its 1997 original. In fact it's more like a glorified version real-time with pause instead as pure TB are no longer relevant with modern graphics, at least what its creator Tetsuya Nomura claimed.

Turn-based games won't die anytime soon despite its declining popularity(in fact more of them are being made for PC by independent studios) but lots of people can't wait to bury it for good. There are two major reasons for its declining of popularity in today's generation of gamers. First as mobile phones becoming more and more powerful and able to run more graphically demanding games such as Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, Fortnite and many action RPGs. Before that most mobile phone games are simple puzzles, line battles(a subgenre to tower defense) and if they were lucky enough they get to play some turn-based JRPGs. Today with PUBG and Fortnite dominates the mobile gaming, turn-based JRPGs are no longer fun to play anymore, even by mobile phone standards. Second is the rise of video streaming. Average turn-based games like Persona and XCOM are not as fun to watch than average action games. As an analogy it is much like watching your father fixing his car in the garage. Sometimes you got to see something interesting but at most of time you don't. An average action RPGs and FPSes are more fun to watch even if you don't really like the games at all, much like watching a basketball or football game in real life, which is much better than watching your father fixing his car in the garage. I myself might watch the single player mode of Call of Duty in Youtube even I had zero interest on the games.

An average FPS game still plays much like its 1990's predecessors such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Duke Nukem 3D. Average action RPGs don't evolve much since 1990's either. Average platformer still plays much like Super Mario games with some variations due to copyrights. Classics such as Tetris, Pac-Man, Frogger and Bomberman almost never change for decades and in fact that is why we loves them. We probably hate them when they took completely different direction like Bomberman: Act Zero in 2006.

Why some individuals like Tetsuya Nomura and some others claimed that turn-based RPGs are no longer relevant in modern times anymore? Marketing gimmick. Contrary to him turn-based JRPGs still sold very well despite declining in popularity. The latest installments of Persona and Dragon Quest series sold by millions. Atelier series also sold well despite being almost yearly releases. Judging by sales alone, turn-based JRPGs won't die anytime soon, just like any other genre.

I believe everything else depends on our perceptions than anything else as well as marketing gimmicks. Some genres will survive as long as there are fans just like turn-based RPGs despite declining demands and popularity outside PC platform.

This one is rather an odd choice, Persona series.

Seriously Atlus should stop milking Persona franchise and let Persona 5 Royal be the last Persona game ever made. The Scramble spin-off/sequel is an evidence that Atlus milking the franchise. Persona series itself start to show its age and a sequel only make matters worse.
