Focus on the screen, during head rotation, it represent the mouse movement of the PC. So, 3D device rotation can be programmed as mouse movement. this already solved one problem.

Enhancing the old game into 3D, this , of cousre, requires re-programimng. in this point I agree with u.

Not necessary to produce 3D graphic. View the game as virtual reality. that's what make the game more enjoyable.
