You can get a good PC for $6-800, but you won't get more than 3 years of decent performance out of it without updating the graphics card and/or increasing RAM at that 2-3 year mark, which turns it in to a $8-1,000 PC.
Increasing the Ram? WHy? Do you think games will require 16gb in 2-3 years?
Also you can sell your old gpu when upgrading, so that recoups partially the cost of the upgrade
I haven't built a PC in a few years, I've moved to consoles after I had kids, so my thoughts may be a bit dated :) For $600 you'd probably be sitting at 4 GB, right? I'm not talking about going to 16, but in 3 years 8 will likely be the standard. Good point about reselling the GPU, I never bought high end GPUs back in the day, just midrange so they weren't worth much when I replaced them.
Well I reckon you can squeeze 8gb 1600 mhz ram in a 600$ build.
And it doesn't matter if the card is midrange or high end, it's gonna lose about 50%-60% of its value in 2 years time, so if buying a similarly priced one you save 40% at least.
I sold my 6870 Asus DirectCU II (148€ in June-July 2011) for 75€ and got a 7950 Sapphire Dual Boost X(which is actually higher end) for 150€, so at the end of the day I only paid 75€ after 2.5 years.

@PernicioEnigma: Sorry I meant graphically and artistically polished, and detailed. Look at that armor, look at that vegetation, look at that faces, those clothes look at those surfaces, that gorgeous KZ backdrops, that Ryse alley..
Both look great, and both are proof big name devs don't care about the pc Platform.
Games thrown together in a few months for console launch are more polished than anything on PC.
I said polished, not technically sophisticated.
Even CDProjekt has gone full multiplat day one now.. Sad.
Yet these "polished" games play like crap...
Give me an unpolished fun game over a pretty boring game anyday.
The point is even though they're crap games and thrown together last min they still are more polished than almost any pc game by virtue of the dev giving a damn because of... console exclusive.
It's puzzling.
Both look great, I can't really pick one over the other with them being so different and all.

Mind you, I said polished, not technically sophisticated.

that time i got banned for 7 days for saying 2d fighting games suck
LMAOO It's an awesome feeling when you're in the middle of an argument with a mod and you attempt to respond only to find you've been suspended or banned...Like dude...argue without abusing your powers. I'm sure I'm not the only one it happened to in those days when Mods could pretty much do anything.
Yea it was ridicolous, people were being banned for no reason back then. All it took was a wrong word in a comment or a Mod PMSing that particular day.
The Nexus forum is still like that.
I recently got banned becuse I said "idiotic thing to say" in response to a mod.
@Ghost120x:
I mean, regular joe buyer has no idea about anything, he only gets info by overhearing other people's conversations or some post he read on facebook some time ago.
Some people STILL believe you can't install programs on Windows 8 but only apps (partly thanks to Gabe's smear campaign). Same went with Vista back in the day when "Palladium" was supposed to block anything non DRM approved.
So I reckon some joe shmoe Holiday shopper might believe what he heard back after E3
