Mercenaries 2 was deemed "the worst game that sold well" because it managed to ship good numbers on the reputation of the awesome Mercenaries 1 alone.

That game was broken, but also had horrendous elements that weren't bugs but actual mechanics designed by choice into the game! Like the worst accuracy ever in a game, where you could empty whole magazines and not hit your target and and the RPG was worst, simply flying in any direction except towards the target, pathetic.

This game can be called the worst sequel, worst hyped up game, worst third person shooter, etc. and can easily be blamed for the death of a fantastic IP with HUGE potential and ultimately the demise of Pandemics, the studio that developed the series and was later shut down.

@pnova Quick time events are part of today's trend, not so much from classic gaming, button mashing I can agree with as part of classic gaming.

Yet I prefer that to watching too many pre-rendered cutscenes and, having help messages pop into view every minute to hold my hand, and the other "make the game very easy for morons" crap.

Today's gaming is a joke and classic style will start getting the high scores, maybe then developers will notice their mistake and repent. =) no hate intended.

It got a 10 because it went back to what gaming was all about some time ago, that's why he refers to the word "classic gaming" often, that's why, it didn't go the trendy way of making graphically gorgeous game that are heavily diluted and dumbed down for the casual player. Example of recent dumbed down game: GTA5

It's not as shallow as saying "this game sucks" but more like Current Gen Sucks!!! and/or Today's Gaming Industry Really Sucks!!!

We are at a low low point in gaming where dumbed down eye candy rules.

@utterlyotter I understand your point, and that's pretty much debatable or open to interpretation. They way I use it in my comment and constitutes my personal opinion is: A real gamer is that one that gaming is his primary hobby or primary form of entertainment, or has been gaming for years on end, or spends considerable off time playing games in a week, or plays daily, he owns a system and starts gaming sessions by self initiative.

Someone that just plays eventually as a last resort to boredom or to please someone else is a casual gamer, which to me is not a real gamer, as gaming is of no importance to him.

Yes, it's highly polarizing as you suggest, but things have to be called by their name, although I don't call them filthy casuals, just they don't fit my description of a real gamer. That's just my opinion, coming from an adult gamer with a career who still holds gaming as the primary form of entertainment.

Levels and layers exist everywhere, in society, in the job place, in education, in economy, etc. and they all serve to divide, separate, differentiate A from B from C because A, B and C are not equal. So it can't be considered an offense that gamers be placed in levels or layers also, because although we are all gamers we are different, so it's a fallacy to think that all gamers are equal, we are not, and that is perfectly logical and makes perfect sense.

Great piece. The truth is that gaming has pretty much hit a flat line in innovation, yet huge changes continue to be pushed in other terms.

Simply put, from some time period up to today games have been receiving large doses of graphics improvements and absurd amounts of dumbing down. Nothing more.

I can appreciate the pretty graphics, but I just can't take anymore regenerating health, reduced difficulty, diluted physics and gameplay, etc. etc. all in favor of casual gaming.

That's why there's so much hate in the web towards games, it's coming from real gamers that feel betrayed by the genres and series they have been loyal to for many years.

If Far Cry 4 and MGS Phantom Pain don't live up to the hype (which I personally think they will) then PS4/XBOX1 gen is doomed to follow down slope just like last gen did. Games keep getting worst as years pass. Developers have forgotten the golden rule: FUN IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN VISUALS
