@BARRICADE_28: "you've never tried it so you simply can't understand." well, there's no arguing with that logic. i'll make a similar argument: wait 7 years and look at how we're still playing games on TV's, mobile devices, and monitors.

exactly. Who the hell wants to stand around for hours and flail your arms around like an idiot. It sounds exhausting. It also looks hot, like I would be sweaty from it. People have already lost interest in motion controls for god's sake. Kinect is just a glorified butler for the Xbox, unless your a child or a mother who wants to do a workout.

How do I walk around in the virtual world? walk into my living room walls? Nintendo Powerpad form a hundred years ago? Stomping in place is very virtual....

What about looking behind me? Do I have to turn my body around? Am I going to be restrained somehow so I dont knock things around in my living room or so I don't smack one of my loved ones with my arms and body flailing about?

You are still going to have to push buttons to navigate the world. How am I going to climb stuff, or jump down a cliff? by pressing buttons... How am I going to interact with objects? by pressing buttons....how am I going to look through my inventory? by pressing buttons....

There are so many limitations to this thing its amazing anyone even seriously considered that this is the future of gaming.

How in the world is that even virtual reality? Its is a virtual view at best. I can't wait to see this product go away. Its a tired idea and a flawed logic as far as enthusiast gaming goes.

Virtual headsets are a joke. The only way this would even be virtual reality is with a complete suit that can mimic every movement of your body. ...and who the hell is going to want to wear that?

So all the previews and screenshots for this game that I've come across so far indicate that it WON'T run on 1080p :(

Are the devs serious? What were they even thinking?? 720p wasn't the way to play this game even way back in 2004! Nearly everyone was playing it on 1600 x 1200 (if not higher) back then.....

My HDTV begs 1080p games. 720p basically shrinks the image and makes the game feel a lot less "cool".

Basically, I'm worried that the biggest USP of this game (graphics/ visuals/ stunning eye candy and all that) is going to be seriously weakened.

Please....please tell me I'm wrong..........

seriously?  your concerned about the graphics of a game that was designed and developed over a decade ago?  why not just play something modern.  Doom was antiquated the day CoD 1 was released, both graphically, and dynamically.  don't be afraid.  join us in the 21st century, you'll love it

if you could see outside of your own little bubble, you'd see that this has been the most successful and prevelant business model for MMO's since the 90's.  its pretty narcassistic to think the world only changes when you notice it change.

You bring up an intelligent argument, but I find that you failed to point at direct reasoning as to how linear storytelling, isometric view and lack of innovation is something that brings it down. Innovation is quickly becoming the most overused and devaluated term in video-game reviewing, and considering it's not a qualitative statement, that surprises me. Blizzard has rarely ever innovated, that didn't stop them from gaining fans across the globe. I'd rather want a polished game than a new but poorly executed one. I'm playing Diablo II for the first time now and I'd say it's worth every hour spent even amongst the many other new games I have on stand-by. That game is hardly innovative, it had dated graphics back in its day and the storytelling is hardly free-form. To be honest, though I've never played Diablo III, I've yet to hear valid reasons why people don't like this game when they liked Diablo II and I outside of the DRM policy.

I didnt say it brought it down.  you assumed that.  I just said that certain things about the game date it and as an overall package offers almost nothing gamers havnt seen.  I agreed that the game is a 7.5.  When did that become such a low score?  rating every game a 10 makes no sense.  higher ratings , I think, should be reserved for games that bring more to the table.  Its that simple.  I just think this game failed to live up to the hype, and more importantly for me, my own expectations.  I'm not even saying thats Blizzard's fault.

..and when people say, "oh, FPS have been the same forever...how are they not dated?"  its simple, FPS have much more dynamically involved interactions within their respective virtual world.  its like asking how come shooting a real gun doesn't feel old school.  or throwing a baseball or darts, or playing football.  pointing and clicking just isnt very skill based.  yes, there are certainly skills involved playing any game, they are just not physical skills, like manipulating joysticks.

Whoever played Diablo 2 for a couple weeks and was done with it must not have done everything you could do or every build you could do. I built A LOT of different characters and I still wasn't done and I played that game for years.

TrentB924

I don't consider playing different characters or builds as additional content.  I like rpg's for their exploration elements (mixed with the action and looting as well).  After exploring the game, defeating the mobs annd bosses, and looting some stuff i'm ready for a new game and a new experience.

My favorite RPG is Fallout: New Vegas.  I have tried going back and playing a new toon on more than one occasion, but I just couldn't get into it.  I knew where everything was, what to expect and what I would see, what choices I could make.  ..and if any game ever had a truly open character customization system, allowing for vastly different characters, NV is it.  so...I'll just move on and preserve my fond memeories of it.

Rpg's are like heroin and playing through them again is like chasing the dragon.  the first time through is always the best, even when you realize at some point you totally screwed your build.:?

yes, I know what physics "is".  they don't exist outside of the physical world either.  there are no physics in software.  just a stream of code.  that code simulates the illusion of weight and gravity.  thats only a small part of the overall illusion though.  Then you have dynamic lighting, dynamic shading, depth of field, and man, many more.

plenty of games do this with a plumb.  Unreal 3, IW v3.0- those engines offer an unprecidented amount of capability in comparison to Blizzards 9 year old Warcraft 2 engine.

you are the only person on the planet who would defend the technical merits of this games visual mechanics as being worthy of achievement. and thats only because you are ignorant in regards to the software industry.

if you like the visuals in this game, fine, they are not horrible or anything, they are just that, unremarkable.  and with that said, I wont remark on them anymore.

What other game can fit this much action on the screen with such intense physics exploding all over the scene and suffer no slowdown for it? That in itself is obvious technical and graphical innovation and really quite an achievement.

MurderMode

probably every AAA mp shooter and mmo from the last 3 years. and a hundred other games.

All I can say at the moment is thank god for kickstarter, smaller dev teams, and services such as steam and gog.com.

BludshedX

does anyone think that if this game had just came out of the blue, from a different publisher, with a different name, that all the reviews (both good and bad) would be any different?

i suspect there are a lot of elements going on here. Clearly the game is not what even the most delusional fanboy would call a masterpiece, thats for sure. On the other hand, the game has been hyped, teased, speculated upon, and mystified to the point where it couldln't possibly measure up. Does this account for a lot of the more negative reviews?

one thing is for certain. this was, overall, one of the most anticipated games over the last decade (don't know of any others whos anticipation went on for 10 years anyway). That is just a set-up for discontent, no matter how you slice it.

All I can say is this: all of the reviews are totally valid. How could they not be? Maybe the guy who gave it a 1 really believed it fell 9 points from his expectations. Maybe the guy who gave it a 10 is new to games and has no real comparative, but all he knows is he likes it and how it works. That all seems very human and acceptable to me.

but...that doesn't explain games that get all raving reviews, or all negative reviews. What is the difference between those games and D3? Maybe there is not one, and maybe all the reviews are honest, although emotional and veering away from rationality. What is video gaming? I would say its at least emotional, and to stretch a bit, even irrational, at least why we like one game over the next.

When you take the entirety of reviews plastered all over the web, you come up with about a 7.5 rating for this game. That sounds like a pretty rational conclusion to me.

Itsa sequal, there are no technical or graphical innovations, the gameplay mechanics are a tried and true system from a thousand games ago, the story telling is, well, basic linear storytelling. Those are all facts, not opinions. ...not unlike hundreds of games that no one remembers.

In the light of those facts, how could this game possibly surpass a 7.5 rating?

For me, I give the game 7.5 overall, due to the lack of any and all innovation, DRM requirements, auction house, and an unispired class and customization system. for myself I give it a 0 rating. Yeah thats right, a 0. I played it for a couple hours and realized I am just not into this type of game anymore. ...and I suspect many feel the same way. Isometric is vintage for a full AAA title.

I'll be playing Skyrim, Witcher 2, Dark Souls, Dragon's Dogma, and a plethora of new games this spring/summer, and thats just action/rpg's. I play racing games and MP shooters as well. There are so many fantastic games, more than I have time to play. Now I'm gonna throw D3 into the mix? Thats like going backwards. The game feels old, as it should, because it is old.

...D3 is an absolutely playable game, that is not in question. I would not consider it great, or bad. I would consider it outclassed by a whole heap of other games. ...and for that reason I'm going to play those other games.
