Well, you can blame consoles and their insistence to appeal to the masses of casual players.
Games are nowdays made to a) work fine in the lackluster, low-cost hardware consoles have, and b) appeal to the mass audiences to sell the highest number of copies possible.
That's why we have shitloads of casual games with 0 innovation and 0 complexity. Just epic lewt and dance animations. Big companies (even the all-powerful Blizzard) are rotten and smaller companies just don't have the resources to make games worthy of 2014.
