@Deeg_1 So basically, Tom want's shooters to take chances.

SO WHY NOT JUST SAY THAT? Why make it about "mortality". Just flat out tell Greg to his face "Your game looks like crap. It sucks. It looks like another clone of a tired genre that is boring. You are not taking any chances, and it frustrates me and many gamers like me."

If he said those exact words, Tom would be hailed as a freaking HERO. He would have become a folk gaming icon: the last angry man.

Instead he comes off like an disingenuous hipster totally disconnected from reality. I don't think he really is(that badly anyway)., but by trying to shoehorn other crap in there to hide is real point he ends up missing out on a golden chance to be the first real voice of reason in the media.

This has been without a doubt the worst editorial snaffu in Gamespots history, and one of the worst in the history of gaming media in general.

Also, I don't understand this fascination with making the hardest, most realistic modes the default mode. Realism mode isn't default on Left 4 Dead, nor should it be.

In the end, Tom was merely complaining about how lame military FPS is, and he is right. MoH will suck, CoD sucks, Battlefield is just a tick above suck, etc, etc. But he went about it in the most asinine, elitist and disingenuous way possible.

Instead of trying to hide behind fake moral outrage, why not just come out and say this "Games like Medal of Honor, Call of Duty and Battlefield are saturating the market in bland, casual mediocrity." JUST SAY IT. Don't try to obscure the real point with non-sense about "realism and authenticity" and "war should be portrayed a certain way"(as an aside, this is really stupid. Should any game with a war as part of the central story be realistic and not fun? Looks like StarCraft has been going about it all wrong...).

And as for the "games don't have to be fun" comment... well that's just Tom's hipster side showing.

McShea sounds like the gaming equivalent of a hipster.
