I own both GH3 and Rock Band on the 360. I basically bought Guitar Hero III for the extra guitar controller, which IMO is better than Rock Band's statocaster (might be a matter of being more used to GH controller, however). The guitar mechanics are different enough between Rock Band and GHIII that they feel like different games, although anyone familiar with GHIII should be able to play just as well on Rock Band. Guitar Hero III has much more complicated fret patterns than Rock Band, but the there's so much leeway in timing of button presses and the hammer-ons are so generously given that it detracts from how authentic the experience feels. Rock Band's fret patterns are usually much less complicated on lower levels, although at higher levels on expert are pretty difficult. The timing is Rock Band allows much less room for error, and hammer-ons are few and far between, making the gameplay feel more authentic. Rock Band's Guitar Mechanics feel very much like the first Guitar Hero IMO, which is arguably the most difficult one to master.
