http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/174239-ps4-sells-4-2-million-units-in-2013-beating-the-xbox-one-comfortably

At CES 2014, Sony has announced that the PS4 has sold 4.2 million units as of December 28, 2013. Yesterday, Microsoft revealed that it had sold 3 million Xbox Ones as of the end of 2013.

As of December 28, the PS4 had been on sale for 43 days and sold 4.2 million units. By December 28, the PS4 was available in 48 territories. If we divide 4.2 million by 43 days, we get a figure of around 98,000 units sold per day

As of the end of December 31, the Xbox One had been on sale for 39 days and sold 3 million units. By December 31, the Xbox One was available in 13 territories. 3 million in 39 days equates to around 77,000 units per day.

From these figures, it’s clear that the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One.

Even if you gave the Xbox One another week to catch up, to make up for the PS4′s earlier release, we’d still only be looking at 3.54 million Xboxes vs. 4.2 million PS4s.

The one gotcha is that the Xbox One is only available in 13 countries and territories, while the PS4 is currently available in 53 (it has been released in five more since December 28). You could argue that, when the Xbox One is more widely released, it will catch the PS4 in sales. Considering the Xbox One is already available in all of its major stomping grounds (the US, EU, Australia, Brazil), and the PS4 isn’t yet available in its home territory (Japan), I find it hard to believe that Microsoft will magically catch up.

No matter which way you split it, then, the PS4 is currently winning the eighth-generation console war.

The Playstation has taken back its rightful throne. The king has returned baby!

By all reports, the xbone seems to be suffering dramatic drops in sales too. I will get into that in a little.

But first things first, this is all such great news for the gaming industry, that the PS4 is significantly out selling the xbone. The correct message is being sent by us.

-The cheaper more powerful console (the PS4) is winning and winning big. This ensures that over priced, under powered gaming consoles like the xbone will not be the norm

-When Microsoft revealed the xbone, it was set to include the most henious, gruesome anti-consumer policies in gaming ever i.e Xbone always online requirements and xbone drm schemes etc SO it feels so good to see that consumers have not rewarded Micorsoft with first place sales for their orginal anti-consumer vision at the detrimemt of consumers, and instead are rewarding the PS4 with big first place sales. By buying the PS4 by significantly larger margins we have currently put a stop to Microsoft's intended always online/DRM anti-consumer future

-Kimect is a spy cam and comes mandatory with xbone. The much larger sales of the PS4 say, we like having the option and choice to use a camera, and hey we dont want the mandatory kinect spy cams

-This has also proved that the future isnt about the xbone's TV features, snapshot features, or the all in one marketing gimmicks of the xbone. Sony made the PS4 with the gamers in mind from day one. So the sales dominance of the PS4 is a testament to the fact we still want gaming. Sony is being rewarded for doing the right thing. Awesome! And thats is one of the greatest messages we have sent by buying the PS4 by significant larger margins! Gaming is what matters.

Anyway, by all reports, the xbone seems to be suffering dramatic drops in sales too. That makes me even happier. The xbone is a fad. PS4 is legit. Let Microsoft burn to the ground for what they tried to get away with (always online/drm) and for also still releasing an under-powered, over-priced, mandatory spying Kinect, spy box/cable box posing as a games console.

Thank you Sony for keeping gaming alive. Microsoft's future is a future where its all about TV/snapahot features, Kinect, and always online/DRM. As long as PS4 continues to sell out like hot cakes we stop Microsoft's intended future from ever happening. Lets continue to do the right thing and reward Sony for being good to gamers!

Microsoft is only doing more harm by announcing things like this, it's only really mindless cows who believe there is some crazy gap between the consoles anyway. But when they say things like this, in this way, it makes it seem like they are doing damage control and it just fuels the fire.

MS needs to just put out amazing exclusives and let that do the talking. Once people see that multi-plats are identical and xbox is killing it with exclusives no ones going to give a dam about a power difference.

What's next, is Microsoft going to tell us how the POWA OF THE CLOUD gives the xbone infinity powerz!

And I bet you would lap that up too.

It needs to be said again...Xbots like you are the worst....You xbots truly are delusional...TRULY!

Thankfully Microsoft's insane and insulting PR/marketing doesnt work on normal sane human beings (PS4 dominating in sales numbers)

The facts are the facts and nothing changes it...

-Vast majority of neutral developers all say the same thing ...PS4 is more then 50% more powerful....

-When you look at the specs of both on paper, and compare, it all matches up...the FACTUAL outcome is....PS4 is up to more then 50% more powerful....

Any one who knows specs can see whats going on:

-PS4 can do much more tflops

-Has much better faster memory thats more unified, and more of it is allocated to GAMING

-The GPU is a 50% more powerful GPU

-PS4 has hUMA capability

-PS4 has a 33% faster CPU

Etc etc etc etc etc

At this point, you are an xbot refusing to accept the reality that the PS4 is SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful.

You xbots NEED to come to terms with reality sooner or later.

Hell, I wouldnt be suprised if the PS4 were actually way more then 50% more powerful considering all the advantages it has (the fact PS4 has a faster CPU, much more powerful GPU, GPUGPU capability, has more of the much faster, more unified ram, plus has hUMA capability etc)

Look at the games also.

Killzone Looks MILES better tha ANY xbone game...

A vast majority of multi-plat games run at higher resolutions and higher frame rates on PS4

1080p on PS4 vs 720p on xbone is a SIGNIFICANT increase in pixel detail.

For an advantage like that to come into to play right out of the gate, that PROVES the PS4 is signifcantly more powerful. You can just up the detail on PS4 games with no extra work.

And if developers want to do 1080p on xbone games then they will have to make sacrficies in the assests, where as the PS4 will still be able to render it all at no costs.

The ONLY way there is parity in multi-platform games is if its a botched port or a money hatted port.. and in that case, that would expose Microsoft....furthermore, the PS4 is significantly out selling the xbone so developers this time WILL NOT be forced into putting up with Microsoft's bullshit and whacky demands

Even when you look past launch at launch window games, Infamous is absolutely CRUSHING every known xbone game in existence....

Playstation exclusives are ALREADY showing off the PS4's VAST significant power advantages ...and that gap will only continue to grow and widen down the line

So not only is the PS4 a factual 50% more powerful, likely even much more then that....and also much more future proof.....its 100$ cheaper (plus when you go with the PS4 you know you will be getting the much better exclusive games as Sony has a much better exclusive library, much better exclusive developers, and is a lot more willing to take risks etc)

There IS NO POINT to getting an xbone. It makes no sense. The PS4 does everything better for less, has better exclusive developers, has more support, and is primarily a GAMING console, unlike the TV TV TV bullshit of the xbone.

You arent a true gamer if you opt for a weaker more expensive spy box instead (A.K.A the xbone)

PS4 is superior in every respect. The PS4 was made by gamers for gamers etc. Thank you Sony! **** you Microsoft.

Also. Kinect comes packaged in with every xbone. Its mandatory. The kinect is a capable spy cam and is being enforced, so when you look at the fact Microsoft is in bed with the NSA just put 2 and 2 together.

Not only that the PS4 is 100$ less 50$% more powerful with no mandatory spy cam and no media apps hidden behind pay walls like on xbox live etc

Undeniable FACTS.

Bottom line, if you get a PS4 you are getting the best, most powerful, cheapest GAMING console

By virture, if you opt for the xbone you are getting F'd over when there is a much much better option in the PS4 that does everything better for less etc

People stupid enough to buy an over priced, under powered, anti consumer xbone deserve whats coming to them.

Thankfully people IN THE REAL WORLD have spoken and have bought the PS4 by significant larger margins. The PS4 has been out selling the xbone 2-1

Congrats I guess. The game was pretty boring to me. I had to force myself to finish it, but of course everybody has different opinions.

Yep, and Ive said it before. I will say it again

Last of Us requires actual thought to play, ammo is scarce, bullets actually do damage, and the combat over all is very brutal and intense.

Last of Us isnt for the ADD addicted dudebros (like you)

Shallow AAA shootfests like Call of Duty/Gears of War may be more up yours and some others speed

Last of Us clearly isnt for the ADD addicted dudebros like you

It's great just how wrong these assumptions are. I have zero interest in CoD and I hate Gears of War slightly more than TLOU. They're incredibly boring games.

TLOU's combat is the polar opposite of intense by the way. It's agonizingly boring and monotonous. Playing on higher difficulties does nothing to change this. It only serves to make a bad experience take longer.

Then youre some body who doesnt like playing video games, because there is NOT one game out there that has more brutal, more intense, third person combat gameplay then the Last of Us has

There have already been examples given

Why dont you actually back up your shitty opinion regarding Last of Us, instead of just going ,"meh its boring"

In fact, I doubt youve ever even played the game. You sound like the typical delusional trolls who hate on Last of Us. Doing what a troll does. Being so vauge and shallow, and never explaining why its boring or bad etc

Is it me or is GTA V lacking the GOTY awards?

When all the release hype dies down and its time to pick the best game at the end of the year, thats when people look at games the most objectively.

Thats why GTAV has no where the same amount of GOTY awards that the Last of Us has.

When it came time to look at both objectively Last of Us was proven to be the better game by and large

GTAV wouldve been the much safer pick, due to popularity, so im glad journalists stuck to their integrity and rightfully chose the riskier, but far better Last of Us

GTAV was rated a 97 at release off of pure hype, money hats, and post release hysteria.

GTAV really is an all flash, no substance kind of game to be honest. Its only accomplishment was in its technical graphics in an open world setting, and letting players do a whole bunch of pointless stupid shit in that open world setting etc

Mostly everything about GTAV was lackluster though, from the shallow mediocre combat, to the wonky driving, to all the boring filler side missions and side content etc

Only thing I liked about GTAV were the hiest missions but there were hardly any in the game, and no other missions came close to it.

I was someone who actually played both GTAV and Last of Us, and I knew the Last of Us was gonna murder GTAV in objective GOTY polls, no matter which was more popular.

I cant help but laugh at all the "bu bu bu Last of Us wont win GOTY because GTAV" posts

Last of Us had a much deeper emotional thought provoking story, it had much deeper, more fleshed out combat gameplay- more importantly had much better combat gameplay period, and Naughty Dog with Last of Us was able to bridge togther both its superb gamplay and superb story flawlessly into one entity, like no other developer/ game has ever even come close to doing.

Last of Us wasnt just the undisputed GOTY this year. Last of Us isnt just considered by many to be the best game of this gen, Last of Us is one of the greatest pure games of all time.

GTAV couldve actually been what it was hyped up to be, and it still wouldve lost handily to Last of Us lol

There isnt any other year where the Last of Us wouldve lost GOTY either

The only competition to Last of Us wouldve been Uncharted 2 in 2009. Naughty Dog is the greatest developer or our time

I thought the gameplay in BIoshock was a lot more fun than TLOU. Story is a toss up.

You posted so fast after this thread went up, there's no way you couldve watched both vids. Watch them both.

Anyway, enounters in Bioshock came down to this: waves and waves of enemies rushing in a straight line toward you. That wasnt fun. Bioshock has some of the most braindead and tedious combat ever. Gunplay is lackluster too.

LOL hell, the BIGGEST complaint about Bioshock, even from hardcore Bioshock fans, was that the gameplay sucked ass in Bioshock and didnt mesh well with the story either

Being objective, Last of Us has much better gameplay.

Combat encounters are so dynamic and sandbox like in Last of Us. You can approach enemies from multiple paths. You can stealth run, play cat and mouse with enemies, brawl it out in brutal fashion, shoot provided you have the resources, mixtures of all the above, set traps, throw items to distract and manuver around, hit with items or crafted special items, or throw items to running meele combos...more so...all those options were all viable to coming out on top, and were done in ways that they were so fun too (Naughty Gods are some of the best when it comes to gameplay design too)

BTW brick throw to pipe smash in Last of Us is one of the greatest and most satisfying things ever!

Lets say you got caught in stealth. Shit would hit the fan, and when shit hit the fan, you had to improvise on the fly or go on the run, and there is nothing more intense!

Or just barely managing to get by a heated encounter while on low resources and or on low health = holy shit too.

Getting caught durring stealth wasnt a "game over" like in other stealth games. You could even run away and naturally lose the enemies, re-evaluate, and give it another go, with a new gameplan in mind, once you got your bearings back. Last of Us has such organic and adaptive stealth mechanics

Bottom line is, Last of Us has some of the most intense, brutal, dynamic, engaging, well-thought out combat I have ever played.

Furthermore, the combat was backed by a real time crafting system and item resource management gameplay.

You could chose to craft for offensive purposes to suite a more offensive approach in combat (motlav cocktails etc) or chose to craft for defensive purposes instead going for a more defensive approach (medkits, shivs etc)

And shivs were even used to unlock doors so you had to really question, do I use the shiv for stealth kills or do I use it to unlock doors.

Even choosing when to craft, since it was done in real time, required thought and startegy. Would even lead to intense on the fly moments. Picture being on the run and low on health while looking for a safe place to craft a medkit as the drums are kicking and enemies give chase. So intense!

Not to mention, that taking shots would actually knock you back, so you were always encouraged to stay on your toes and play smart. Even in gunplay.

Last of Us has such deep combat gameplay. Im having trouble thinking of a third person combat game that had as much gameplay depth as the Last of Us had.

Last of Us is not your typical AAA corridor shooter like Gears of War/Bioshock is

Last of Us requires actual thought to play. Combat is flexible, and beautifully designed by Naughty Dog- from the mecahnics to level design/level lay outs/enemy placements....and you have the tools at your disposal to tackle the encounters how ever which way you wanted to.

The gameplay style in Last of Us might not be for everyone; considering its also unique, very brutal, and very intense, but that gameplay style that Naughty Dog was going for was objectively done to expertise. It matched the themes/story perfectly too. The combat gameplay in Last of Us is objectively excellent and played like something revolutionary when taken as a whole. Combat that perfectly blended survival horror with action, that was still challenging, and was backed by item resource managment mechanics etc

Nothing plays like the Last of Us!

What is more amazing, is that that superb gameplay in Last of Us only served to compliment the superb story in Last of Us and vice versa.

The way you had to scavenge for items as a survivor, and how what ever items you crafted served the combat etc

The way combat was so brutal, intense, and a reflection of the story

The character developement that would occur IN GAME.

Example, as the game went on and Joel and Ellie would get closer, Ellie would start actually helping you out in combat (stabbing dudes from behind, throwing bricks at your enemies giving you a slight window of oppurtunity)

The dynamic in-game dialogue would even reflect Joel and Ellie getting closer at the same pace as the story went on

Etc etc

Last of Us is just a god tier game. Naughty Dog with the Last of Us did things that no other developer / game really has done before. The character developement that occured in gameplay, its deep dynamic third person stealth action/item resource managment combat gameplay, the way its superb gameplay and superb story only served to compliment each other and came togther as one.

Last of Us is the greatest game Ive ever played, and ive beem gaming since on the NES

Oh and the story in Last of Us was mature based on its own merits... unlike the pretentious, overly wrought/overly complex for the sake of it story that Bioshock had.

Bioshock's idea of a good story was throwing out as many unnecessary twists as possible just for a shallow "wow" factor. All flash.

The story in Last of Us was objectively great on its own merits, it had the substance, it actually resonated on a deep emotional level, and it was just fundamentally well put together and well structured with amazing characters that were well developed etc

Everything Bioshock failed at trying to go for, Naughty Dog with the Last of Us NAILED ten fold over.

Naughty Dog did it all much better and in a far more choesive manner then the Bioshock developers could ever dream of. Im not even going to mention the failure that was the Tomb Raider reboot. The Tomb Raider reboot still hasnt even surpassed Uncharted 2, while Naughty Dog with the Last of Us has already taken gameplay and story each to the next level. Naughty Dog is the greatest developer of our time.
