Can't really measure this by downloads, as Tapped Out and Real Racing 3 are free games. But I think the revenue stats show what a microtransaction game is capable of.

@pvspartan36 @Species8472_5b The major difference being... movies have been around longer, and have developed methods for continuing to "sell" the movie to people even after the theatrical release. Video games have not been around as long, and are still going through the growing pains of increasing points-of-sale. One method is DLC. Another method is subscriptions to online play. Another method is micro-transactions (pay-to-win).

But why should consumers pay the price for a relatively new business? Let them figure out how to make money without taking away our options. That just smacks of laziness and pride.

It should also be noted, places like Gamestop exist because there's a demand for it. If no one wanted to buy a used game, then Gamestop wouldn't exist. So, in effect, Weerasuriya, is complaining that a large enough customer base wants to buy used games. If Ru wants to tell customers what they can and can't do, that's his prerogative, but please don't blame the customers for flailing profitability. First it's piracy, now used games, what's next? Global warming?

Haha... don't want people trading in your games? Make a game that people don't want to trade in. It's called replayability. If your game doesn't have it, then why pay $60 for something that you play for a week, and then collects dust? Unfortunately for this dev, God of War is a game without much replayability... it's fun, for a week.

I keep all my good games, and trade in the crap ones.

@BLaverock Not saying it's right, but you do realize the govt doesn't keep that $500k? It goes straight back to the anonymous donor once the case is done (unless the kid decides to run away). Everything else you said is true, though.

@thenephariouson

Agreed. I like how both companies are listening to the customers for what they want. Maybe some think they should push more towards the future, but I don't think they can just completely ditch the past all at once. For example, eventually, all the games will be digital, but there's no reason to force it.

@thenephariouson Gonna need a reference for that. Unless you want to stop sidetracking the issue of "competition = consumer benefits"

@thenephariouson "Sharing", as in, you mean that hack of downloading your gamertag to a memory card and tricking your friend's 360 to think it's you? There's a difference between "being able to do it" and "being encouraged to do it."

And I hope you can appreciate that the instant ps4 decided to make it as simple as logging in to your account (i hope) that MS comes out with "Oh, you can family share again". Competition = consumer benefits

Hmmm... might this have something to do with a PS4 user's digital library being accessible on any PS4? I hope so... that just means competition is benefiting consumers.

Battleships > Diablo 3... when you consider how awesome D2 was, it was just a huge letdown. I can't not buy this soon enough.
