If you have Firefox or Chrome you can use the Ghostery plugin. Not only does it get rid of those weird ads, but it also makes the abhorrent comments section disappear. ;) Two birds with one stone. I can't recommend it enough.

I see what you're saying but you can't really change a Mario platformer that much before it stops being Mario. I enjoy playing the games and they haven't been releasing them to the point where I get sick of them so I don't mind a new game every year or so as long as they take a 2-3 year break every once in a while to stop the Mario market from becoming saturated and bland.

Now I can finally recreate my Patrick Swayze fantasy. How I long to feel your hands on mine.

I inquired about this before, but to no avail. :)

I understand where you're coming from. I completely support having a "Block Comments" check box in the options. Honestly, there really is no reason to have them at all, but I understand that there are a large group of people who enjoy reading the opinions of complete strangers so we are severely outnumbered. Heck, judging by the quality of the posts I'd wager that the comments section is why many people visit Gamespot in the first place. Those same people would feel out of place if they were unable to announce their thoughts to tens/hundreds of thousands of people, just like they can on Kotaku, Destructoid, and Youtube, so instead they'd go there to read the headline and the first few sentences of the article before posting their words of mind-numbing enlightenment.

I disagree that people would be inclined to simply un-check that box, since it would be buried in the options menu, and secondly because the objective of said option would be mostly for those who just want to use Gamespot like a newspaper, without having to look at all the "clutter" that doesn't add anything of value and more often than not just leads to directionless arguments over the insignificant opinions of random people that were once constrained to the off topic sections of forums. And if they do happen to un-check that box, then they are more than likely in the group mentioned in the above paragraph

The issue is the difference between the internet and reality. On the internet, nothing is sacred, and for every one belief you hold dear there are a dozen people whose new-found purpose is to taint that belief and prove you wrong by taking advantage of the lack of rules, and fact that they're a thousand miles away and don't have to worry about getting their teeth knocked out. That doesn't happen in the physical world, or at least it doesn't happen at a fraction as it does on the internet. Those same people are probably pretty normal in reality, but as soon as they get behind a keyboard everything they learned about respect and decency in the physical world are thrown out the virtual window and we're left with the social side of the internet as we have it now. I am convinced it's only going to get worse.

Lastly, although I know that the mods do their best to remove any comments with spoilers in them it is as simple as typing a sentence in a text box and clicking "submit" for some disrespectful person to ruin a game for anybody who may scan the comment section -just because they're there-.

It's for these reasons I believe that a "Block All Comments" option would be beneficial. We're expected to ignore them, and for the most part we do, but that's a bit like Kate Upton walking out in a bikini and asking everybody to look away the second she enters their line of sight. Even though she has the intellect of a beach towel you can't help but take a peek.

I'll take your guys' advice. Thanks, topsemag55 and RandoIph. At least I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. **Added** Still, I'm wondering if there's any way to implement such an option. Is there anybody who can tell me if it's even possible?

I completely understand. I've been doing the same for pretty much every article for the past 1-2 months. :) I liken it to the carvings in a bathroom stall. You're already there so you might as well read them, but in the end it's just a lot of nonsense you've seen a hundred other times in other stalls and you often leave feeling like you've lost a little of your humanity and would have been better off staring at your feet and playing the theme song for Cheers in your head. ....or something like that. Gamespot is the grocery store in which those stalls reside. Only the stall walls are literally everywhere now and all I want is a pound of hamburger and some potatoes. It's a nightmare scenario, I know. I've outgrown the need to express my opinion in a space where my opinion doesn't/shouldn't matter, and rightfully so. Those reviews are for your opinion to be known, not other people's. The comments section of websites are an exercise in frustration and futility and all this is why I'm requesting this small feature.

Good point. :) I was actually thinking about it a little yesterday and I suggest a "Disable comments" option in the settings menu. It'd be the best of both worlds. People who feel the urge to comment on everything can still do so, and those who want to view Gamespot as more of an online newspaper can without having to look at the extra clutter. Everybody's happy, and Gamespot doesn't lose traffic from those who only come here to use it as more of a social networking site or their online diary.

Hello! I was wondering if there is a way to hide the comments that appear after news stories (and now reviews)? As a long time visitor to your site I've noticed that the comments never add anything to the news/reviews and seems like a place that just ends up with a handful of people encouraging argumentative behavior. This is just my opinion, but the site was a much more enjoyable place before comments came became standard after every article. For some people I think the comments system might actually be a form of an addiction as it's not uncommon to see the exact same people commenting on many of the articles on a daily basis, even those that don't seem to interest the person(s) for any reason but to alienate others with troll-like behavior. I think it'll be even more of a problem now that you've allowed people to comment on reviews. I admire you guys for wanting to expose yourselves to even higher levels of criticism and/or hate, but I personally don't want to be a part of it. :) I understand that I could just -not- look at them, but to be honest it's kind of hard not to. An option to hide all comments (if there isn't one already) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. **Added** I admit that this request could be viewed as strange to a lot of people, but if you take into consideration that I'm the kind of person that liked it better when game consoles only played games and when you inserted a cartridge or CD into the system it would just simply work it isn't too strange anymore for me to want my video game news/reviews site to simply show me the news/reviews, unlike websites like Kotaku and Destructoid, which have become a breeding ground for unpleasant people to get behind a podium and spew arbitrary information that nobody asked for. I've always viewed Gamespot as having a more professional demeanor that provides objective news and reviews and that's why I love you guys so much. :)

i like it the way it is, minus friend codes. I never use my headset when on PS3/360, and I always turn off other peoples' voices. I very, very rarely hear anything even remotely relevant and/or intelligent come out of anybody online. Either somebody is fighting, making dumb sounds, playing music in the background, having the sound too high on their tv/home theater systems, acting cocky/arrogant, or screaming when they die. The only exceptions I can think of are games like Left 4 Dead or tactical shooters like Rainbow Six, and both I play co-op with a local friend so I have no need to listen to a bunch of people I will never see and frankly don't care about. And games like counterstrike I just use the map and quck text options. Most Nintendo games I can think of wouldn't benefit from having voice anyways. Anything I can think of having to say before/after a game can easily be said using quick texts (Good Game, Good Luck, etc.) I know this doesn't apply to every body. But I'm just that kind of person, and I know I'm not the only one. I've got better things to do while playing games than making small talk with random people online. But then again, I'd take a single player game over a multi-player (unless it's local co-op) one anyday so I'm not the best example... :)
