He's basically saying we've discovered that people are idiots, and can't understand basic concepts. We have to educate these idiotic masses so that their deficient brains can understand.

He's not apologizing for trying to shaft consumers, he's regretting not doing better at manipulating people into thinking they weren't getting shafted. He should have just said directly that they were being too greedy, and not considering the wants of the consumer. Then they may have got some respect back. Now they've lost even more.
