@kirkulator: Pretty sure thats one of the new features they added in the new versions. I`m playing RE 0 now and it works there.

You should always pick up every item you find and then just drop it on the ground if you don`t want to take it with you and it will be marked on the map so you don`t have to remember where they all are.
