[QUOTE="Kinitari"]Just some points I think need to be pointed out.

Microsoft's Gaming division - lost 5billion with the last gen, dont know how much more they lost for the 360's launch, and then now another 1.1billion.

Sony's Gaming division - Psone, Ps2 huge successes, Ps2 still making steady profit and PSP increasing in sales and (I think) starting to turn a profit as well. PS3 launch and technology backing took Sony about 1bil, and they are losing a certain amount (something like 150-250 I gather) from PS3 manufactuering ea console - but at the same time, the PS3 may single handedly win the next-gen format war.

So - from a broad company perspective, which seems like the better off gaming division right now? That doesn't account for the future though.

Also, if Microsoft were to lower the price of consoles, they'd probably be losing per ea console sold as well~

Actually Sony's game division lost 2 billion for the past fiscal year, and according to SOny themselves, they will continue to lose for another year.

If that's the case i should buy Sony shares as soon as sony hits the $30 dollar mark

[QUOTE="Yellow_Rose"]

MS won't have to pay off the $1.15 billion, it's already been paid.

"Microsoft announced it would take a $1.05 to $1.15 billion hit to its April-June earnings as a result "for anticipated costs under its current and enhanced Xbox 360 policies." LINK

In other words, instead of MS announcing $3 billion (hypothetical) in profit this past quarter, they will announce $1.85 billion in profit. The loss will be counted as part of their past fiscal year and won't have any bearing on this fiscal year.

So yes, MS can easily announce a price drop this week and it won't affect them.

Okay, I'll assume that you know nothing about business.

Just because Microsoft managed to play an accounting game and push its loss back to the last quarter doesn't mean that the company won't have to pay money now. The division is currently losing money on repairs, even if it gets reported as happening yesterday.

As for this affecting a price drop, it doesn't mean that the xbox won't drop, but that the chances of it dropping are lower.

Lol I agree when it comes down to it Microsoft is at a loss... But it didn't affect Microsoft that much cause after that 1 Billion loss stock share only went down by 18 cents so it's not that big of a deal. Although the chances of a price drop is about as low as the chances are for PS3.
