I didn't think he was motivated by evil itself in the movies. Both in the comics and in the movies he wants to make a better world for humans. However, he doesn't share Xavier's vision of a world of mutants and humans living together, and believes that mutants must take this world from the humans. In any of the movies I saw him doing evil stuff just because he is evil (he even shows a lot of respect and esteem towards Xavier). The only really evil thing he did was abandoning Mystique after she lost her powers, but I think that had more to do with Magneto's extreme disgust toward humans rather than because he was evil
