Before I continue, I would like to say that I personally think that if it weren't for people pirating games, we probably wouldn't have the DRM and similar programs like it. Anyway, the DRM is basically a failed attempt at stoping pirates and rather than preventing it, it only made things worse (prompting most people to illegally download games with DRM, like Spore for example.) If you ask me, we payed for a copy of these games and we expect to play these games without any problems, rather than installing 3-5 until you buy a new copy. Steam is a good example of what the DRM should have done with Bioshock, Spore, etc. since if you type in the correct password previously, you don't need to be online to play certain games. Sure, I don't believe in pirating and I wouldn't mind a well-run program that tries to prevent piracy, but angering your loyal buyers by presenting a fauly system (DRM) will only be another victory for internet piracy. I wasn't surprised at Podhajski;s comments, considering how he is part of the DRM and offers "solutions" to pissed off games, like these: "It is clear that DRM must not influence a PC game in any negative manner nor decrease the quality of a game. We very clearly understand this requirement. We aim to increase quality, and offer additional features such as trial periods, additional levels and downloadable content." I don't think some extra content will distract people from the DRM problems. "Podhajski says communication is the only way to teach gamers about the benefits of DRM systems like SecuROM." What kind of benefits are there for gamers that bought DRM-inflicted copies? I don't think Podhajski has explained the "benefits" of DRM systems yet. “As an example, PC gamers love options such as Try and Buy, however, only a few of them know that such models can only be realised by using DRM. The same applies to subscription models. It is important to understand that DRM is always designed to help the industry. For all parties, as this is the only way to go.” I still don't buy this considering how hurtful the DRM has been. However, Podhajski is right that the DRM is the only way to go, since they already screwed things up so much, going back would cause even more dysfunction.
