Dear Mr.Cage, please don't confuse hardcore gamer with FPS fanatic please, while there is some overlap in the 2, not all hardcore gamers are FPS fans. There are plenty of hardcore Puzzle, Adventure, Sim, Racilng, etc. fans that wouldn't touch an FPS with an 'insert length of pole here'.
They have to say things like this to make sure that some of the more idiot shareholders realize that these types of numbers will fall off relatively quickly. We make fun of analysts for saying things like this but there is, sadly, a reason that they have to say them.
Releasing one new IP in, how many years has it been? That isn't risk, that is playing it as safe as you can. As much as I think David Cage is a pompous, self-absorbed asshat, he at least doesn't care about betting the future of his company on every game he puts out. Hell even EA, a company as guilty of this as anyone else, has started to show signs that they are wanting to invest in original IPs.
Microsoft didn't publish Dishonored, Bethesda did. If you read the article it mentions that Microsoft didn't want to publish the game itself for fear of scandal, if someone else stepped up to put it on the 360 I doubt that Microsoft would have cared.
