Haven't had any experiences with Samsungs.

But I personally don't trust seagate anymore. I had 2 seagates crash on me in the past 10 years. One of which i puked out $1000+ to recover what I could. It held all my important work files.

Don't get me wrong, Seagates are great performers (I admit, I still buy their 7200.11/7200.10 and what not to test their performance for fun, but I use WD raptors).

I just keep my important stuff in anything but Seagates from then on.

A C2D processor with a Front Side Bus of 1066MHz (which is 266MHz, quad-pumped), would communicate with the memory at 266MHz (533MHz PC-4200 RAM is all that's really needed for 1066MHz FSB cpus).

This has nothing to do with what the person I quoted wrote, but I'll say it anyway.

Contrary to popular belief, running DDR2 800MHz (400MHz) memory on a 1066MHz FSB C2D system DOES NOT boost performance over plain old DDR2 533MHz memory, since the CPU's actual bus speed is only 266MHz.

My_name_a_Borat

Then is there a reason to use DDR2 1066MHz memory if only DDR2 533MHz memory is needed on a 1066MHz FSB C2D system?

Hell, I have an ATi X1650 XT from Sapphire and it says Crossfire compatible on the box for a reason....

It's only optional if you actually HAVE a Sli compatiable motherboard A/O you want to waste money on another card just to get a boost.

(FYI, if you're in the market for this kinda thing, unless you do 3D work or other serious apps, it won't really help in Gaming. Just get a better graphics card instead)

TehAirHendrix

I had an XFX 6600GT AGP and it said SLI on the box.. lol. That thing had me searching all over for an AGP sli board hunt for quite some time.

I've heard that the E6850 can hit 4.0GHz on stock cooling. O_oHiryuu_

Yea that's what the guy at my local parts shop tells me too.

What a predicament we have here. I'd feel stupid telling people I bought a duo-core (E6850) when I could of bought a quad-core (Q6600) for the same price. But at the same time, not buying a the newer chips with 1333FSB also seems like a dumb move.

Hi all,

I can't decide which to get on J22. Do I want a quad-core Kentsfield at 2.4GHz or the duo-core Conroe at 3MHz with the 1333FSB? At the same price, intel sure knows how to play with your mind. I guess the Kentsfield will be a better multi-tasker while the new Conroe will process stuff faster. What are your opinions?

Thanks for your time.

Hi there,

What processor do I need to make full use of a 8800gts without bottle-necking? I currently have a X2 3600+ and a 7900gs. Haven't OC'ed the processor yet, I'm still in the process of looking for a good heatsink.

I'd rather get a new board and cpu than to waste this nice video card.

Thank you all.

Here is a cost breakdown for this system so far (cdn $):

  • CPU - $80
  • MB - $70
  • Ram - $90
  • Case - $35
  • Total - $275

the E2140 will cost me $100.

The cheapest mobo I found that supports this chip, uses ddr2 667, and has intergraded video is:
Asus P5L-MX Socket 775 Intel 945G + ICH7 Chipset Dual-Channel DDR2 533/667 Intergrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 5.1 Channel Intel High Definition Audio Gigabit Lan PCI-Express Graphics Slot Support Core 2 Duo Processor Micro-ATX

Which would cost me $90.

Is this extra $40 worth it to go for a E2140? or will the Athlon X2 3600+ be sufficient enough to utilize the 7900gs?

on a side note: will the cheapest 400W PSU be good enough for a 7900gs? I only have 1 HD and 1 DVD-rom if anything.

Hello all, I recently got my hands on a used 7900gs from a friend who got the 8800gtx. He was too lazy to sell his used videocard and just gave it to me. Now I am looking to build a temp system as cheaply as possible just to put this card to use. I would like to hear some opinions to see if these specs is good enough to not bottleneck this wicked videocard.

  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ (65W) Dual-Core Socket AM2, 1.9GHz, 512KB x2 L2 Cache, 2000MHz HT, 65nm
  • Crucial Rendition 1GB DDR2 667 (x2 for a total of 2GB)
  • Foxconn 6100M2MA-RS2H Socket AM2 GeForce 6100 Chipset Dual Channel DDR2 533/667 Integrated nVidia Video Sound Lan SATA PCI-Express Graphics Slot Micro-ATX
  • Some generic case with a generic PSU (400w+ perhaps) that will cost me

I Choose a motherboard with on-board video so I can possibily give the 7900gs to another gamer (who plays older games) when this cheapo systems becomes a websurfer/movie watcher.

Any and all comments welcome. Thanks for your time.

Edit: changed ram configeration to 2x 1gb

XP recognizes my 2x1GB perfectly fine. It recognized everyone else I know with 2x1GB's just fine as well. What are you talking about? XP before SP1 maybe?

That aside, I agree - picking up some peripherals would be a great way to burn some cash and feel better about yourself. New speakers, keyboard, and mouse should all about do it, and help keep you happy for at least a month.

You obviously misunderstood. XP supports that much RAM but that much RAM in XP is pointless for gaming...see link...

LINK

I too would like to see this LINK work.

Although 2gb of ram may be useless for gaming, if it helps with the overall operating of the system, i.e. re-opening programs quicker, burn DVDs without worrying about interruptions, or even scrolling around a high resolution image in Illustrator etc etc. It may be worth it.
