I'll agree that video games need deeper, more mature story-telling.
At the same time, I feel video games are a long way from their "Watchmen" and when a developer tries to make a game "art" they usually end up making a mess.
...Or, Ubisoft just has realistic sales expectations.
Remember, this is a company producing a sequel to Zombi U - a game that only sold like 400,000 or so copies. They're after a profit, but that profit margin might be smaller than what other companies are after.
It just means he loves Nintendo games, but doesn't want to buy a Nintendo system.
The funny part is didn't Nintendo say if they ever stop making consoles, they'll stop making games and their franchises won't be available anywhere else?
I won't deny that the Vita has some great games coming out, but the 3DS is completely superior when it comes to JRPGs...
Currently, there's Tales of the Abyss, Fire Emblem: Awakening, SMT: Devil Survivor Overclock, Etrain Odyssey IV, and SMT: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers. We're getting SMTIV, Project X Zone, and Bravely Default: Flying Fairy - which is hailed as one of the best JRPGs in very long time.
This doesn't even include potential games like the Dragon Quest VII remake as well as titles that we'll most likely get like the upcoming Etrain Odyssey and the Devil Survivor 2 remake...
As well as the massive catalog of great games coming out or already out.
Not saying the Vita is bad, mind you. I'd get it over the Wii U right now - but the 3DS is amazing.
The gamepad has a lot of potential. It just needs to be used in the right ways.
Imagine a Fallout game, where you don't have an onscreen Pip-Boy and instead have to go through the gamepad to access your menus. Wouldn't that be awesome? If you don't think it is, you're a bad person.
Frankly, I'm not looking forward to the "next generation" of consoles at all. Most (but not all) games worth playing on the next X-Box or the PlayStation 4 will also be available on the PC, where they will run better anyway. Not to mention when it comes to games, I can honestly say I'm more looking forward to crowd-sourced RPGs like Wasteland 2, Project: Eternity, and the upcoming Torment game than I am any AAA title.
Honestly, I believe the high cost of development (which forces games to be released on multiple platforms) will eventually kill gaming - back in the day, PC games and console games were different and I played both for different reasons - these days, it seems most of the big developers expect for Nintendo seem to forget that home consoles, no matter how much they would like to be, are not computers.
You don't need AAA titles to have great character development - I've yet to see an RPG surpass Planescape: Torment and back in the day that game could run on the average family computer.
Secondly, when it comes to gaming the best stuff coming out is either from Nintendo (since while their games aren't groundbreaking, they're still fun) or funded by Kickstarter (Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, Project: Eternity, and the new Torment game are going to be better RPGs that any AAA piece of crap expect maybe Witcher 3.)
