No, but I have swept stakes before...but...that's not quite the same thing. As potentially corny as that line was, it was actually pretty funny.
Well, perhaps that is the origin of the term "sweepstakes"?
Back in the day, a group of people would rotate in turns sweeping stakes. All was well until one day an individual in charge of sweeping stakes for the day found treasure during the sweeping. This caused a mass hysteria in the group as each member tussled for the role of sweeping next, in the hopes of finding treasure as well. Eventually all were killed in the fierce battles until one remained to claim the treasure and the role, who then named the horrid event that had transpired as "sweepstakes".
This term was passed on to others and eventually evolved through the relentless march of time, until the term evolved in to what is known today...
