@dani3po Like Super Mario 3D World and A Link Between Worlds (GOTY on this site) in 2013? One guy gives a game an 8, a "great" score, and it means death of Nintendo's creativity?

@JustPlainLucas Judging from the video review, the game is still loaded with a ton of content. For a handheld game, it probably exceeds many others in this area. I am actually questioning the comparison to Brawl in the review, if anything. The Wii U version should be compared to Brawl in this way.

Great points, especially the ones in which you mentioned Mark's completely ignoring some of the game's greatest aspects.

I agree with what you said about gaming review standards, and Kirby games. Kirby games are always pleasant, and you'll find little if any real flaws; but they typically do not push any boundaries. I'd also say that Canvas Curse and Epic Yarn were innovative, the former in its gameplay, the latter in visual style and presentation. Canvas Curse, in my opinion, is the one Kirby game I'd consider elite, though every other Kirby game I have played ranges from good to great. And Kirby's Adventure on NES is a classic.

@MooncalfReviews @foxfoxi I've played plenty of mediocre to fair games, even a few from Nintendo. But Nintendo or not, anyone who calls this game mediocre is obviously missing something.

Dull, derivative level design? Completely disagree. The stages are well-crafted and require good precision to pass, and there are more than a few features/set pieces that keep things fresh. In an industry where monotonous 2D platformers such as Limbo (still a great game in spite of its shortness and repetitiveness) get heaps of praise, how is Tropical Freeze considered dull? Cheap platforming tricks? I honestly don't know what he is talking about. I am on the final world with around 90 lives and have died maybe 25 times (most of which came due to my carelessness). Harsh checkpoints during boss battles? What? Individual stages are devoted to bosses, so it's not like you have to traverse an entire level, get to the multi-faceted boss, lose, and start somewhere in the middle of the stage again. And he had nothing to say about the excellent soundtrack? And he basically called the visuals bland? I don't think that last point is even worth addressing.

I believe that there is a such thing as a bad opinion, and this review is an example of one. There simply is not enough evidence to back up his claims, especially after I personally experienced the game. If I were to write an essay for one of my grad level literature classes with its quality being equivalent to this review, I'd get a C- at best, if the professor is feeling generous...

I think you mean the 90s. Donkey Kong Country came out in the nineties. And this is the whopping fifth entry in the franchise.

It's a decent review with good points, but the positive reviews this game is receiving are not all necessarily dishonest...are they?

That's an interesting comment, because I don't see where Walton used the term "bad" anywhere in his review to describe this game. Oh wait, he did: "None of its levels are bad..." I actually read the review.

It seems that DKTF is a decent platformer that does not reach the lofty heights of games like Super Mario 3D World. For us platforming nuts, it doesn't necessarily have to be THAT good for us to enjoy. But some of us may be somewhat disappointed all the same. I will know when I play the game for myself.

The good thing is that staff can do multiple reviews. I am surprised no one has fone back to review The Last of Us yet.
