my gf has one of the new macbooks, i run tf2 and left 4 dead on it no worries. although not as graphically taxing as cod: waw, i did read an article http://www.trustedreviews.com/notebooks/review/2008/10/21/nVidia-GeForce-9400M-Hands-On/p2 that indicates that the reviewer ran cod4 ok on it. haven't tried it myself though so i don't know for sure.

Cheers for advice on the gigabyte board it does look good and isn't a huge jump in price.

Thanks again.

Erm... the 3x1 gb is just stupid. You can't use triple channel with that mobo.mattpunkgd
Well thanks for your erm... input. What would be stupid is if I was to go and buy it and discover that point when it was too late before asking the question of someone. I'd rather ask a just stupid question than make a just stupid mistake.

Hi all,

My fairy godmother beat santa to the punch and I just scored an asus engtx280 1gb gpu and a thermaltake 1200w toughpower psu. Of course this means its time to build me a new rig. I've been looking around for some of the other key components and this is what I have come up with:

Mobo: asus p5q-pro expgate s775 p45

Cpu: intel e8500 OR q8200

Ram: corsair tr3x3g1333c9 3gb (3 x xms3 1gb)

Is this a suitable combination? I know a little about what to look for but not enough to start throwing money at things without a few pointers. I'm not sure for instance, whether the mobo is suited to the ram kit etc.

I would be grateful if someone more knowledgable than me could look at this and comment, and perhaps recommend an alternative if it is appropriate.

Thanks in advance:)

Well, so far so good. TF2 runs beautifully on the new macbook with integrated gpu. Haven't tried warhammer online as I just don't have time at the moment. My guess is any source engine game, blizzard games, maybe WAR and I'm sure a host of others with comparable gpu requirements will run perfectly on this machine.

A few of my mates are sold on this too.... I would be as well if I didn't get the rage-inducing error "this game is currently unavilable. please try again later".

Given that I've paid for this title, I'll be having a **** if this doesn't get fixed. I've researched the valve forums, tried all possible fixes there bar formatting my pc, and submitted a ticket, which only suggests to try the options that I've already tried. GRRRR, enjoy fellas.

Just don't stream Rick Astley's "Never gonna give you up" over it. It won't be funny because its about as original as Chuck Norris and Your Mom jokes.

TheJGene, are you sure the review wasn't about the version with 9600M?RK-Mara

http://www.trustedreviews.com/notebooks/review/2008/10/21/nVidia-GeForce-9400M-Hands-On/p2

As for whether this review can truly be trusted, I'll let you know. As I mentioned, there will be one of the new model 13" black macbooks at home from tomorrow, so once I factor in work, installing boot camp/windows/steam/warhammer online and downloading/patching everything up, I should know after the weekend if this is true or not.

Having said that, the 9400m chip looks not too bad for an integrated chip, and while a macbook pro with top specs would be nice, they are frightfully expensive.

The latest generation macbooks have geforce 9400m integrated gpu in them. A review I read somewhere (which I would link if I remembered the site) mentioned that the system (under bootcamp) could run COD4 on all medium settings, presumably AA etc turned off, on the native resolution of 1280x800 on the 13" screen.

My girlfriend is picking one up tomorrow. I'll repost with the playability of Team Fortress 2 & Warhammer Online after the weekend.

If you were going to get one, there's no reason why you shouldn't get the 512mb version, it certainly can't do any harm unless $$$ is the major factor in your decision.

You should be aware that even though there may be a hardware update on these models in the pipeline, Apple has a track record of clearing existing stock levels before releasing new editions.
