@zeleni92 He's being attacked for a good reason. There's a big difference between hinting at the fact that some games lack creativity or that the industry as a whole can feel "stale" sometimes rather then saying "I am better then almost all other games designers."

And you are right, he does have the right to think of himself as one of the best. Same as people have the right to bash him on the head for his egotistical attitude. He's not shining down on us with courageous words of truth when all others wouldn't. The video games industry is not an oppressive regime that requires prophets.

@_el_Greco_ @Morphine_OD Ever since the whole merging of Activision Blizzard it went down hill. I believe that they signed into a business deal by their owners Vivendi Games if I am not wrong and do the whole Activision Blizzard thing. This happened around the time that World of Warcraft TBC came out which, for me, is the last game from Blizzard that feels like a Blizzard game. Which consists of stellar design and personality, good value for your money and amazingly approachable content with incredible depth for those who wish to seek it.

Proper Education doesn't create great designers. It's experience, imagination and first and foremost; Communication and understanding of other people that gives designers a true edge in a production environment.

Most game designers in the industry are self taught in the theory of game design. The reason I call it theory is because there are so many places that game design rules can apply; applications, educational programs, board games and even interactive cinema (trans media). There are so many genres and sub-genres with their own individual rules and theories that it is almost impossible to study game design as a pure subject.

Richard Garriot is a good game designer for his own niche of RPG games. That does make him a good game designer in that particular area (depending on your opinion about the Ultima series.) But take him out of his element like he tried to do with Tabula Rasa and see what happened.

Every designer is different, there's no such thing as "Better". Some are more technical like John Carmack, Some are more about exploring emotions like Will Wright, Peter Molyneux, Nicholas Clark, Bryan Singh and Chris Bell. Some are more about the mechanics like Edmund McMillen, Tommy Refenes While some are more about the story and it's world (Tim Shafer, Ron Gilbert and Ken Levine).

It all comes down to what games you like most. Garriot's statement is just pure ego boasting. It wrong, it's childish and down right pathetic coming from such an experienced designer.

I love the way Songbird looks at Elizabeth, really creepy and attentive.

I cannot wait to play this game.

This just shows how strong is the potential in the Alien franchise, It's too bad that colonial marines didn't do it any justice.

I truly love Gearbox but they really messed up this time.

Hopefully a good and devoted developer will come someday and do it right for once.

...This was pretty pathetic..

This is one of the times that I feel to old to understand why is this considered good marketing..(After leaving out the obvious titillation.)

It feels like there is a curse on the Alien video game franchise. This is a real surprise if you take into account that gearbox have a very respected Résumé of First Person Shooters.

Anyway it's a real shame, I would love to see a good Aliens game someday.
