@xenomorphalien: The whole industry has abandoned motion controls, Nintendo are simply being stubborn about it and revived it for the Switch, most likely only for the Splatoon crowd. Motion controls should've been an optional extra for the Switch, and not integrated into it to drive up costs. I have no interest in re-buying motion controls for a console that is marketed as a handheld hybrid. It is NOT a Wii 2.
I know what innovation is, I was referring to the context of it actually being meaningful to the industry. Anyone can come up with new ideas, but how many of those ideas can change video games in a significant way? On that note, I don't consider Nintendo real innovators of anything but new ways to make money, unchallenged by competition.
There is nothing wrong with peripheral accessories to a console experience, such as VR or motion controls. What Sony did right and Nintendo did wrong is all about what each focuses on. Sony indulged motion controls and VR, it does NOT make it the focus of its console, it focused on the games instead, whereas Nintendo did the opposite and put their hardware at the forefront, and games second, despite being far more talented with games than hardware.
I honestly think Nintendo would be a far better company if they quit the hardware game altogether and just made games instead.
@xenomorphalien: Fanboys are going to defend Nintendo whether they succeed (Wii) or fail (Wii U). Some people are just deluded and cannot register basic objective facts.
I am sick of the term "innovation" being bandied about when it comes to Nintendo hardware. It's a disgrace to the term. The Internet is an innovation, motion controls and whatnot are merely just short-term gimmicks designed for short term profits. This generation we have a hybrid device, the next generation we will get something entirely different from Nintendo. If it's something that doesn't last, then it is not real innovation.
The Switch is awesome because it sells well? You know what else sells well? Hard drugs and sugar products that can kill you. Popularity is not an indicator of anything but popularity. Good and bad items can sell well.
Gee, it sure would be nice to get gaming news that isn't something that already exists on another platform or a remake of an older game. The next proper Direct cannot come soon enough. So far the only thing newsworthy from the Switch is the latest Nintendo scam where they plan to make a tonne of money off cardboard toys at rip-off prices. Yay...
@ballashotcaller: Effective for what purpose? Getting you from A to B? The game is open world and free-form, in such a context, you don't need a story to go exploring. The BOTW team had choice to either do a good story or a crappy one, and they chose the latter.
It has by far the worst representation of Ganon I have ever witnessed. Ganon used be a genuine character, in BOTW, he was nothing but an objective.
I just find it a bit rich Peter Brown is complaining about story points when he gave BOTW a free pass for quite possibly the worst story in Zelda's history!
