He wasn't obliged to apologise at all, even if it wasn't a sincere one. Do we really need to force someone to apologise to us to make us feel better about ourselves? And if the apology is forced, then it's not exactly valid, is it?
I'm all for diversity, always have and always will be - I'm an Asian dude myself (not that it's relevant, obviously). But this is nonsense. How hard is it to, oh, I don't know, create a NEW character instead of springboarding off an established one?
So basically the only way we can achieve diversity is by taking white characters and changing them? We can't have diverse characters who are three-dee and standalone without prior backup? What sort of message is that sending, exactly?
