She’s one of the most savvy politicians around. Using games to support her cause might seem insane to people above a certain age, but it shows an understanding of her supporters and a willingness to think outside of the box. That deft use of digital mediums is one of the reasons she is going places.

Did Level 5 self publish games outside of Japan? Every Level 5 game I can think of has had a major publisher for its Western release. Nintendo for Layton, Namco for No No Kuni, Sony for quite a few of their earlier games. I guess their Eshop titles were self published maybe? But I feel like their physical games were mainly done by other publishers.

Greedfall was Spiders’ best work yet so I’m all for something set in a similar era with similar themes. While the writing could still use a lot of work it has also improved dramatically over time. I’ve always loved this studio’s ambition and creativity even if the execution has often left much to be desired.

I never played this game back in the day but I’m going to guess that the real time lighting and shadows are the focus of this remaster, considering neither the N64 or PS1 supported them, and only a top of the line graphics card on PC would have been capable, and nowhere close to the fidelity shown in this trailer. The textures also seem to have had their resolutions increased and the character models also seem quite high poly for a game from 1999.

@bababooey12: I think the problem was less what they showed and more what they promised. They said gameplay reveal. We got almost no gameplay. Out of the half an hour or so of footage, probably less than 5 minutes were actual gameplay, and if you subtract Second Extinction and Bright Memory you are probably looking at under 30 seconds. And, again, that isn't a problem at this point, per say, but it is a problem when you promise one thing and then don't deliver. Call it a reveal of a portion of the third party launch window lineup and I would be fine with this. But gameplay reveal? Nah.

@just1mohr: At the start Microsoft said these would all be out by early next year.

@Roach: I believe the real issue is a logistical one. If you allow any movie released in any form throughout the year then you would have to watch hundreds, if not thousands, of movies to determine a shortlist for nominees. You would basically have to hire people whose jobs would be to watch movies all day and then determine which ones warranted being shortlisted and which ones didn't. Now a lot of that goes on already of course, but we are talking orders of magnitude more. Right now, for example, someone has to watch every film submitted as best Animated Film, but their job is just to ensure that it follows all the rules and requirements regarding how much of the film is animated. The shortlist contains virtually every animated film released theatrically in a given year. Then the more senior members of the animated film branch of the academy watch all the films on the list and select 3-5 to nominate for best animated film. Then all Academy members associated with animated film creation vote on the winner.

If you open it up to any film released on any medium, then you go from under 20 films you'd have to watch to several hundred. After all, Crunchyroll is a streaming service. And the latest Dragon Ball and Naruto films are technically at least slightly animated. Same with Z grade animated fare like the studio that knocks off Pixar movies with alarming speed. So what would happen is that most Academy members would only watch the theatrical releases anyways because they are people with jobs and families and they aren't getting paid to watch these movies, or the Academy would have to pay people to watch all the movies and create a second tier shortlist for the ones that could possibly be good enough to win, which would include 95% of the theatrical releases and maybe one or two streaming releases. So the actual change to the shortlist would be negligible but you'd be wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars paying someone to watch bad movies and confirm that they are bad. A much cheaper option is to just show the movie in a theater for a week. If you can't find a theater willing to show your movie then chances are it was never going to win an award to begin with.

@KillzoneSnake: The risk of hospitals being overwhelmed leading to needless deaths when the supply of ventilators cannot meet the need. The death count is low because the Chinese government is uniquely capable of responding to large scale disasters is a rapid and aggressive manner. They needed tens of thousands of extra hospital beds so they built a massive hospital from scratch in just a couple days. That isn’t possible in the US where Gamespot is located. The federal government does not have the constitutional authority nor does it have the financial means. By limiting social interaction the goal is to spread out the rate of infection over a wider period keeping the number of cases below what can be dealt with at any one time.

I swear when Gamespot moved away from a algorithmic scoring system 15 years ago I never thought that two console generations later people would still be complaining about it. An 8 does not denote the presence of a flaw, it indicates a great game that is not an essential purchase for every gamer. There does not need to be any notable flaws for it to be non-essential, it just isn’t a classic that academics will be citing as a masterpiece of the medium for years to come.

I think he was probably close to correct with his initial guess. Pillars was one of the first of these old school rpg’s to hit the market. Then we got Divinity Original Sin, Tyranny, Shadowrun Hong Kong, Torment, The Bard’s Tale, and several more. And most of those games were at least good.
