I strongly believe that there should be far more focus on "Morality" in gaming. Today, where "respect" is on the decrease, it is vital that games do not encourage the "No Consequences" attitude. A great game is one that asks a question and forces you to live with your answer. The real crux of the issue is the ability of the gamer to have an effect on the game world. This is what differentiates a game from a book, or film. For this to be valid, and rewarding, choices must have consequences and they must make sense. If you kill an innocent child for no reason any character who discovers this should react based on their moral construction. Will they try and kill you on sight? Will they congratulate you? Both attitudes should be present to reflect a world where any outcome is possible. Developers aren't "deciding" what is right and wrong. This is fundamentally a question of cause and effect. You may decide that all characters in the game are "bad", that is a fair design decision. The problem only occurs when a "bad" action allows for a "good" outcome. This sends mixed messages to players, and could lead, in the long term, to a confused sense of cause and effect. We do not want the prevailing attitude of SOME gamers to be; "Oh it's OK to kill people, nothing bad will happen to me / no one will criticise me for it". Games are not real, but, over time, then can obviously influence your attitude. Or educate you if they are well made and responsibly thought out.
