I don't necessarily get the gripe over the cost of BlizzCon tickets when the article admits that both airfare and lodging will cost you more. The article also points out that Blizzard loses money on the event, but half of these comments are along the lines of "greedy bastard Blizz"... what gives? If you don't want to pay, don't. If BlizzCon were free they'd have to rent out L.A. to make a place for everyone. Any Con is first and foremost a social event, regardless of subject or content... It's about taking a short vacation from your computer screen to interact with likeminded people. Yes there are big reveals, but the magic of even the big reveals is the shared energy and enthusiasm of the attendees. If you just want news, stay home and read Gamespot.
Two villains came to mind as soon as I clicked on this article: Chrono Trigger's Magus possessed all of the above qualities in an almost brutal way that forced the player to either sympathize with him or reject and destroy him outright. Discovering his character's motivations only AFTER facing him in battle was for me the most satisfying arc of CT's excellent narrative -- I'll never forget a certain blue-haired boy with a cat. Not suggesting Square has a monopoly on badass villains, but since Irenicus was mentioned in the article, Delita Hyral from FF Tactics has to make the list. His beginning as a faithful companion only intensifies the moral darkness of his evolution. Though perhaps FFT's most understated character, only Delita comes to mind as a villain that succeeds at both seeming utterly human and blossoming into a self-seeking, unmitigated bastard right until the very end -- or was that what made him seem human in the first place?
