Having just played fallouts 1 and 2 and played the hell out of oblivion (which i think was fun but could have been so much more), i have arrived at the conclusion that it it will still be a mint game, barring a couple of flaws which bethesda seems to propegate through both oblivion and fallout 3.
Basically my biggest gripe is level scaling, i dont know about everyone else but i sort of like just having all difficulty of creatures and items accessable at all times rather than only when im at a high level. In fallout 1 and 2 (which i recently bought :D) you could go and get your head blown off by supermutants up at the military base at level 1 if you so wished or build yourself up slowly. You also became pretty damn good against the weaker things when you levelled up. Oblivion wasnt so fun because you didnt see the cool enemies until you were a high level, and then the good items became easy to find as well. I would prefer really rare items you had to work for by like blasting your way through a supermutant lair or some such, rather than levelling items whereby power armor is in every chest come level 10. I like the delicious sense of fear you get off sneaking into a high level area with a crap character thinking, "oh crap what is going to kill me around this corner?" or "what cool items can i hopefully make it out of here alive with" and then running like hell from some super powerful nasty...
next the removal of some of the adult content is a tad depressing (not talking about kiddy murders because we never had them in europe anyway) but you do get the feeling that it was a more fun game when fallout was no holds barred gritty machoism with some added humor (yes groin shots lol :D. You get the feeling bethesda is more of a company to play on the safe side when it comes to taboo material (lets face it fallouts 1 and 2 were deliciously sordid :D)
erm finally the whole thing their doing with stats is a tad depressing, because i took great delight in doing different things with stats and playing completely differently, from the retarded behemoth who could only reply with grawp, to a erudite diplomat who could talk his way out of anything but couldnt fight his way out of a paper bag. The idea that dialoigue isnt gonna be affected by stats removes some of the RP value in my eyes.
these are basically my only gripes with fallout because they are not as fun as they could be in my eyes (note im not so bothered about the canon which is being slightly rewritten and such, and the new guns and FP perspective because its a new company so they should put their mark on it, but most of my gripes were present in oblivion as well, which i beleive detracted from the expereince) its obviously not going to be a bad game (indeed it will be a total giggle!), but it could be soooooo much better if they changed a few tiny things and stuck a tad more closely to some aspects of the origionals...
