the biggest problem with both metroid and zelda is they have tried to add these "stories" (which were never a focal point) and have not meaningfully advanced or refined the gameplay formulae into anything awe inspiring. its not the end of the world, but it is why i hold the earlier games in much higher regard.

eh someone else will have a system, and id actually say you shouldnt bring one. if you dont, you will be much more likely to find other things to do on campus, socialize more, have a good time. and then you will enjoy gaming more during your breaks. just my .02

if you make a game, and it sucks, selling 50k copies is still better than none. you put in the development time, might as well try to recoup a few dollars.

i kinda have to agree with you story. there is just something missing lately and its that whacky japanese imaginative aspect the older games had. it was present in chrono trigger and secret of mana as well as most of their older games. now it is turning toward this repetitive realistic political drama... it might work for some people but not for me. the most glaring example thus far was FFXII. technically, the game was superb for me. it lost the annoying battle scene transitions and took things to a much more fluid play experience. unfortunately, the game completely lacked any charm and the story was horribly dull. FFX somehow still worked though so i cannot completely discount the turn they have taken. And conversely, while i loved FFIX, it felt more like a parody of the older games.. it was somewhat an impostor, i cant describe it any other way. I very much enjoyed the game but you could tell it was an homage to the older games as opposed to one made on its own merits. XIII looks like it will carry on in the vein of XII. I will still give it a go but I hope it is not another in the series i dont even bother to complete. It doesnt look to have any of the old charm many of us grew up on.. the vibe i get is political yawnage.

[QUOTE="ASK_Story"]One big aspect on what makes Metroid, Metroid, is the exploration and backtracking. If it's like Ninja Gaiden than it would be a linear experience with maybe a few explorable areas. Also, is it going to be chapter based? Metroid was seamless and you can do and go wherever you want. Yes, the level progression and next checkpoint was linear in that you were always guided where to go next, but still, it was all connected in one gigantic world. If Metroid M is more Ninja Gaiden then Metroid, will we have a linear, level/chapter based Metroid game? That's my worry. I'm confident Team Ninja can deliver a cinematic Metroid with great action...but how they deliver it will be the difference. If they stick to what they know than I fear their Metroid version will be Ninja Gaiden-like. I don't know. We'll see.Phantom_Leo

Here's your answer:

1UP: What most people love about Metroid is that it offers a huge, open world. It's non-linear, there's so much to explore, and you can move about at your own pace. Is that something you're going to be retaining for this game, or is it going to be more of a linear, level by level progression?

YS: If you think about this one as being maybe similar to Metroid Fusion, then I think you'll have an idea of how the story will play out. It's still linear in the sense that there's a progression, but there are side areas that players can go into. It will retain that true, Metroid feel.

Read the whole interview here.

i find this comment highly highly disturbing. going back through the areas at any time (and sometimes the wrong ones) in order to progress where you once could not, is a huge part of what makes a great metroid game. linear/level by level nonsense does not fit metroid. if this is anything like fusion, that aspect is going to be a big disappointment. on the other hand, i have to commend them for making a game like this. ive been begging for a 2.5D metroid for ages, and if this comes close i have to support it.

the interface is clunky but workable. the graphics are fine. they didnt blow my mind but they were perfectly acceptable at time of release the story was very interesting. i cared about most of the characters. the gameplay was a blast. gunplay is not the only part of combat, go play a FPS for that. there was nothing more fun than running into a room and lifting or pushing enemies and shotgunning them as they fell to the ground. most people who were disappointed with the combat were looking at this game like it was primarily a shooter. its not. the vehicle controls were fine, i never understood this complaint. if anything, the vehicle was way overpowered. exploring side planets was very dull but thankfully the rest of the game made up for it.

id just prefer a remake of the original. the load times on that sucker make it almost unbearable, but it was a phenomenal game with a fantastic atmosphere. some of the most mood setting music ive ever heard in a game as well. maybe a duo remake of BO1/SR1. I can dream..
