Affirmative action was a necessary evil whose time has passed. In the beginning, it was an understandable method for giving minorities chances they just were not getting. But it's 2008. Let's stop pretending that "White people" (whatever that is) are dominating America and the "playing field" needs evening out. We have a black man running (quite successfully) for President. I think we can stop giving special privileges based on race.

Here's a test. If someone is telling you NOT to listen to Jacko's music for whatever reason, play some of it right there. Sooner or later, their feet are gonna start tapping, their legs are gonna start moonwalking, and their lips are gonna pucker while OOH!'s come flowing outta their mouths.

Then they'll shut up and you can dance 'til dawn.8)

[QUOTE="Metron4"]If you plan on isolating yourself from society you'll first have to learn how to be self-sustainable. You'll need to generate your own power. You'll need shelter and a means of repairing that shelter. You'll need water and food. Clothes are optional, except as a defense against the elements. The desert is the least likely place on earth to do this. What you need is a sailboat (no engine), a water cachement and filtration system, a method of catching fish, shellfish and crustaceans, plus a method of identifying which seafood is edible and what is not. For water, you'll need a desalinization filter, plus spare 55 gallon drums in case it doesn't rain. Attach solar panels to your hull, linked to a battery bank for power. Use a wind trubine attached to the mast for wind power. You could go with wave power as well, but that would mean putting holes in the hull, which means more repairs down the line; this is also why I said forget the engine. You only go where the wind takes you. Don't get anything that uses up too much power. Forget refrigeration; look to dry goods, dried meats and vegetables. You'll need Vitamin C so you don't get scurvy (yarrr), so take powdered supplements. Keep plenty of first aid stuff on hand, cuz you won't have any medical help in the middle of the ocean. Oh , yeah, go park yourself in the middle of the ocean and feast on fresh fish forever, sit buck naked under the stars, and play your music as loud as you want. The whales won't mind.Hate_Squad

I think someone was a hermit once:P.Is it true that grasshoppers taste like french fries?

Yes they do. And squirrel genitalia have many, undocumented uses.

Santa Fe, New Mexico. Never have to get up early for game releases or wait in long lines for blockbuster movies.

YES!!! I Found them!

The movie you were talking about..."Cosmic Zoom" ( 1968 ).

And the movie I saw with it..."Why Me?" ( 1978 ).

Both courtesy of the National Film Board of Canada, which explains why I remember seeing them at the same time.

Thanks for that trip to the past! :)

Holy Memory Recall Batman! I haven't thought about that film since I saw it when I was a kid too. I remember the camera kept moving non-stop, just like you described, and it would show the factor number on the side. That was a major revelation to me as a kid. Bringing the whole universe into perspective really blew my mind. I also remember it was accompanied by an animated short film called "Why Me?" About a guy who finds out he has an hour to live and runs around trying to figure out what he should do.

If I find out the title, I'll post back here. (provided the topic doesn't get bumped away).

This is absolutely true, and absolutely embarassing:

Up until last year, I had no idea that when it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it's winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and vice versa. Boy, did that throw me for a loop. I always thought it was the same season all over the world.

And yes, I am 36 years old. Pay attention in school, kids.

I am not happy. It really is a downer. I dont like anybody on the right. I think the left has a better choice with Obama, but I think he is terrible. Anyway a polititan is polititan and never gets the job done.

flavort

You can thank our false dilemma, two-party system for our wonderfull choices.:P

But I totally agree. The President is only a figurehead anyway. The best we can hope for is someone who won't screw things up any worse than they are. Do I sound cynical? Truthfully, I would love to live in a time where someone besides yet another crusty old white guy is President.
