Full backwards compatibility would be a big selling point for the next Xbox. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony makes an effort to get PSN games like Journey working on PS4.
I think charging for online play would be a mistake on Sony's part. They have already differentiated themselves from Microsoft with PS+ without using the paywall model.
Entries in Nintendo's core franchises are typically much different than the previous entries. The only exception I can think of to this is New Super Mario Bros. but even those games differ more than CoD and big sellers.
I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. It looks like Nintendo has decided to move away from the touch controls after the negative feedback Phantom Hourglass got.
