I'm thinking it'll come down to Guild Wars 2, Halo 4, & Mass Effect 3; with Dishonored, Journey, & XCOM being three potential spoilers for the big honor. Personally, I'm hoping for either Guild Wars 2 or Mass Effect 3.
Chris didn't mention the intriguing storyline behind the Halo: Infinity Spartan Ops co-op episodes? Shame. Still, 343 definitely didn't drop the "Bungie Ball" when they took up the Halo lore & really made a high-quality campaign to usher in a new story arc. The daily, weekly, & monthly challenges help keep its multiplayer appealing to me--something that I can't say, unfortunately, for Black Ops II. Borderlands 2 is great in its own right, w/ a great antagonist, and the nice humor, but I find it best played in marathon gaming sessions, w/ others. I never tried Natural Selection because I use my PC these days primarily for MMO's; may try Far Cry 3 sometime in the Spring of 2013, if we're still around, of course.
Not enough major MMO's to have their own category, and if there was such a category, GW2 would definitely win hands down over WoW: Mists of Pandaria, The Secret World, Rift: Storm Legion, & TERA. All the other new MMO's that may've come out this year are not well known enough.
I knew it would come down to ME3 & GW2, and this is a big plus for NCSoft & ArenaNet as they roll out their annual Wintersday (Holiday) events for both GW1 & GW2. While I can't say the final part of the ME Trilogy was crappy, as @Prats1993 put it--I felt the end to 3 was fitting enough, given the big picture, even w/ the "Extended Cut", I do agree w/ the way Guild Wars 2 was designed to take what worked in the first game, tie its story from 1 to 2 in a way, and redefine the way a MMO can be w/o being a "World of WarCraft Copycat". GW2's story missions are immersive, you have a wide variety of characters & classes to play in several different starting paths, and a wide range of different approaches to the story quests, and the dynamic events are a blast. So congratulations to NCSoft & ArenaNet for winning this honor, and earning my vote for 2012 New MMO & PC Game of the Year.
Torchlight II could be the sleeper in this category, but I see it coming down to the Best New PC MMORPG of the Year--Guild Wars 2, and the Best Console RPG of the Year--ME3....and I can't choose either of those two, because they're so equal to me.
The Halloween-themed Mad King Thorn events had always been a major staple of Guild Wars events, and I'm glad Arenanet decided to feature it in the sequel. Hopefully, if we're still alive & kicking after 12/21, we'll see them do a Wintersday holiday event.
