PC gaming is, to me, a way of life...

This made me laugh.

Some of the games mentioned here are simply too old for most of us to have played. The original Doom? I have to play it on the PC because...? Sorry, but that is well before my time. I agree with some of the other suggestions made in this thread though. System Shock 2 and the Half-Life series are must-plays for anyone who enjoys a good story.

While Doom is a relic worth playing for the nostalgia factor, System Shock 2, the Lucas adventure games, and the Half-Life series are excellent games worth playing simply for the unrivaled experience they offer.

Why's that funny?

On Doom, I don't agree. I think it's worth playing for far more than nostalgic value. Get a mouselook mod and pump it up to ultraviolence and you're gonna get an experience like no other. Hardcore crazy action that no game can equal. games like Painkiller and Serious Sam and Starship Troopers tried, but nothing comes close. Doom is also readily available through a boxed Collector's Edition or through Steam.

I still play it today, and nostalgia has nothing to do with it. It's the best at what it does.

Because claiming PC gaming is a way of life is incredibly... sad? It's just a platform for gaming.

As far as Doom, I strongly disagree. Serious Sam easily surpasses Romero's landmark contribution to the world of PC gaming in terms of quality. The sheer sense of mayhem alone is remarkable. To this day no other shooter is able to duplicate that feeling of being overwhelmed by truly massive amounts of enemies. The pacing is just perfect and from a programming standpoint it is a remarkable achievement for its time and quite possibly still remarkable today. Doom's "hardcore crazy action" is mainly achieved through stylistic touches (like gore and atmosphere) that have been duplicated countless times.

It's a classic and deserves a ton of credit for moving multiplayer forward on the PC. However, it is hardly unique anymore. As I said: nostalgia.
