It's probably fine. Doesn't EB have a guarantee that if a used game doesn't work they will exchange it for you? I think that's the case so don't worry.
To the OP; I think your idea is on the right track using the regular vga cables and starting it up in standard-def. I believe you will be able to get a picture that way so you can go in and change your HD output settings in the dashboard.
I would say RSV2 but it kind of depends on what game type you are playing. The Vegas campaign is definitely more tactical just from the fact that you have so many tools/techniques at your disposal.
