Thanks for all the help I really appreciatet it.

What do you think of this motherboard and processor.I can use my old GPU and PSU and il find a good case and a deal on ram. I got windows 7 ultimate as a gift yesterday so that's out of the way. All the other parts I can buy as the build comes together. Hopefully it dosent take me 2 years to build this since im 16 and its hard to get a job around here.

[QUOTE="GV-Dalton"][QUOTE="swehunt"] You also need to exchange the RAM modules, i guess you have DDR or even the really old sdram and new motherboards use DDR2/DDR3, so your looking at a whole new build im afraid. It's even a big chance that your PSU isnt ATX v2.2 standard since old motherboards didn't use 24pin MB ATX cabage either at that time, the standard is fairly backwards compatible but old PSU's (Older than the ATX 2.0) wont work with new motherboards. And the olnly thing you got left is the case, 8year old PC didn't have need to be well wented/airflow you would most likely need to change that to fit new more capable components also. So im sorry to tell you that you will need to get a whole new PC. this is what entrylevel would cost you: Ph2 CPU ~100-150 Motherboard ~ 80-100 RAM ~ 80 GPU ~ 100 - X Case ~ 60 HDD ~ 60 PSU ~60 Total sum starting from ~ $550 - X That would make a PC able to play any game at decent settings even the most demanding ones.swehunt
The thing that sucks is that I just got 3 gig of ram for it and me missing that one detail is causing a new build. Im just going to sell it on craigslist or something and start over. I think il keep my video card and power supply but the rest of it goes to some kid that wants his own pc. Even though it ruined my day thanks for the help.

You seem a bit unsure of the hardware you got. (Better to be sure than guess.) Before you do anything i would like you to DL CPU-Z(CPUID) and find all info in there such as. 1: chipset (reffering to motherboard.) look up what link you use for the graphics. ( its either AGP or PCI-E) If you use a AGP that would render it (your current graphic card) usless for any new motherboard. 2: Ram modules, are they DDR or what are they?, the ones you already purchased what type are they? 3: What specific PSU have you got? (Not able to check in CPIID/CPU-Z, perhaps you already know that) Im just tryi'n help you not to do the same mistake twice. :P

Thanks for all this I dident expect so much help with this but it just means when im more experianced with all this il help someone else later on down the road. I have a new topic for my next build. I'l post the chipset and stuff later today.

As many of you know I epicly failed my first build just because I overlooked age and compatability. Since I dont want this to happen again im going to start from nothing with the advice from here. The budget starts around $500 but can go up considerably since im used to not gaming that often I can wait for the build to come together. Thanks in advance.

Also lets see some good arguments about all this. It gives me a good idea of how good things really are and its just fun to read.

Here's the story. I got a computer a year ago and started building it for gaming. 1 gig radeon hd4650, 550 power supply, 3 gig ram. The problem is the processor isn't as good as i thought, 2.8 pentium 4, and I have no clue what to buy or if I need to get a new motherboard thats compatible with my old parts or just say F it and start over from scratch. The more iv looked into this online the more it seems like im screwed. Any help would be great and appreciated.

I got the demo from gamespot and instantly decided I had to have it but after months of searching and only finding torrents it time to ask. Does anyone know when or if its going to be released in America? I found another thread about this game but the newest post was in 2008 and had no answers. Another did say it was going to be released in October 08 but still nothing.

GTA4 is a good one but I dont think you would like your 5 year old to learn some "new words" ;)
