@livedreamplay: And I don't believe you can "definitely" say anything like that... that his opinion is wrongly founded, dishonest, or manipulated. You're grasping at straws, and making unsubstantiated, ludicrous statements just because his opinions don't agree with your own. It's ok that he has a different opinion. Just let it go and move on, and let it be what it is... a difference of opinion.

@livedreamplay: Opinions, by definition, vary. If everyone was part of the same hive-mind, you wouldn't need reviews, because we'd all think the same way and buy the same products. We're dangerously close to that already. Just because someone has a different opinion than you doesn't make that opinion dishonest, for ****'s sake.

@ianbrettcooper: "...the biggest problem the game had was insane pre-release hype generated by delusional fans who demanded that the game be something it was never meant to be, and who assumed that developer talk months and years before release amounted to 'promises' of content at release. No game developer in history has been held to that ridiculous standard."

That about sums it up in a nutshell.

@ianbrettcooper: I think it's also pretty clear that the people who were disappointed wanted an Ubisoft clone-- Far Cry or Assassin's Creed in space. That was never what was intended for the game, and these people took a line or two of promotional dialogue, severely twisted in support of their far-flung and nonsensical expectations, and then went on a Crusade of Anger against Hello Games when the actual game didn't align with their generic AAA-clone expectations.

@ronaldmcreagan: If you don't know, just be thankful.

But... he's a not untalented, popular British singer, and the tidal wave of public backlash for something so innocuous is not only silly, but a waste of the gripers' collective time.

@gonetoyourhaed: Thanks for the information. People need to keep in mind their preference for game genres when reading reviews. I remember watching Nick at Kinda Funny trying to just brute force shoot his way through the beginning of Deus Ex, and having an almost impossible time playing the game in a way it wasn't really intended to be played. If people are trying to play Prey as a pure shooter, and it's intended to be a more robust experience, perhaps that is some of their problem. (Although from what I can tell, some of the low review scores out there are a response to bugs, which hopefully will be fixed if they haven't been already).

A game in a genre I'm not normally a huge fan of needs to be spectacular to be worth my time; but a genre I love often means a might get quite a bit of enjoyment out of a mediocre game. A comment like yours helps clarify what kind of game it is, and whether or not someone might be predisposed to enjoy the game anyway.

No one needs to play The Witness if they loathe puzzle games, for example. It could be the best damn puzzle game in the whole world, but if you loathe puzzle games, you're probably still not going to like The Witness. (Personally, I loved it). I also loved the Silent Hill entries Homecoming and Downpour despite their mediocre reviews. But I'm predisposed to liking both the puzzle and survival horror genres.

There's no need for me to get offended if someone else doesn't like a game I like or score it like I would. What's more important is that I can take the content from their review, and understanding their personality and opinions and how I will likely weight positives or negatives differently, then make a good educated guess about whether I'd like the game or not. If I'm familiar with a reviewer, a well-written review should tell me whether I'll like a game even if they hate it. And that's the really important part of a review-- to give the readers enough information that we can make our own judgements calls about purchasing.

@hoscba @FranklynStreet I assumed if the capability was already there, Danny would have simply selected "Irish." Maybe he needs to select Ireland as a country instead of the U.S.? Though I'd be shocked if that actually fixed the problem, and of course then likely his date/time would be incorrect.

Seriously, though... obviously the Xbox is made by Americans, primarily for Americans, and they need to do a major polish on the voice recognition software on units sold in other countries... and if you have an accent that doesn't match with the country you live in, there's going to be a world of trouble.

What they probably need to do is work on the software so that no matter where you buy it you can choose an accent in the settings (much like choosing a subtitle option on a dvd) and have the machine be able to adapt to it. But that means likely a lot more work than whatever they've done for the baseline "one voice" voice recognition software.
