Good question. I've pondered this since I was a wee lad.

What bothers me is what DC did to lead up to the Battle for the Cowl/Batman R.I.P. storyline....which would be Final Crisis. What a horrible story. Grant Morrison has officially lost his damn mind.

P.S. - Final Crisis sucks.

I'm more of a trade paperback man myself these days-aside from the random one-shot. But even 1shots are being collected in trades nowadays. Other than that, I collect very specific back issues at conventions, etc. Also, I enjoy getting commissioned pieces of art from awesome artists!
