In Japan, the game-makers are the rock stars. It's their Hollywood. And it's gone from small, focused teams of like-minded indiviuals working on a single creative vision; and turned into a cold corporate monster with teams of people possibly in the hundreds working on games (just doing their jobs). Gaming isn't what it used to be because of this complete change in direction/production/focus.
It's not all doom and gloom. There are some companies out there just starting up, trying to get things back to where they were. The old developers and publishers we grew up with are too big to stop doing what they're doing now. They're a big-time business, and they want to sell their candy to as many people as possible. I hope we get to see even more smaller developers emerge soon to give some balance, and truely start a new generation of real gaming ideas. Because if we keep trying to follow these old guys around, we're just going to keep on getting dissappointed.
