"Resident Evil: Revelations eventually made its way in an HD format to everything from PC to Xbox, and even Nintendo Switch a few years later."

Remake and remaster haters would love to have that game remain a 3DS exclusive so they could force everyone to go blind while staring at that tiny screen (while laughing diabolically).

@johndoe12345: I beg to differ. If other developers follow Capcom's example they will remaster or remake their games and make enough money to fund a brand new project, the success of which they can't be certain, unlike the remaster and remake (if they do it properly like Capcom).

"it raises the bar for what a good remake is and at the same time, preserves Resident Evil 4's legacy as a genre-defining experience and one of the greatest games of all time."

All of you the other developers who are letting their games rot away on old code - read, learn and follow.

@Akriel_Boulve: I could become an emulator expert with knowledge that matches or surpasses yours but I don't need to do that. The only thing I need to know about them is that they exist and probably usually work (if you're lucky). That is enough.

Right from the start you injected emulators into the conversation as an alternative to remakes and remasters to try to prove that they are pointless. I gently explained that it is not so. A game coded for the current generation has a better chance of surviving than its predecessor coded for hardware that was current in 1995. Take the original "Witcher" for example, a game made for PC only back in 2007. It is now being remade using Unreal Engine 5 and will have several issues fixed in the process. If the developer shared your point of view they would have been satisfied with the original and told us to get an emulator, but they aren't. They will give us a better version using the newest technology. I believe that the new version, created in the upcoming years using the newest Unreal engine, available for all platforms not just PC, will have a better chance of surviving than the original PC code from 2007 running on an inferior engine.

You have inflated your observation of companies making remakes and remasters to absurd proportions. They are not concentrating on them. EA did not make a single remaster or remake until recently, they've only made 4 or 5 so far. This can hardly count as a culture of remasters. They own hundreds of games that a lot of people wish they would remaster but they aren't doing it.

The number of versions for The Last of Us has received does look a little amusing but I understand the developer - they want their game to be available on the current hardware as there are people out there who never owned a console before the PS5.

"The problem is you can't know which developers are getting lazy until they actually flub up, and in the process they can damage an IP." is what I agree with but that is why it's important to differentiate between good and bad remasters and remakes. A bad one raises such an outcry that the developer quickly understands their mistake. Look at the RE3 remake mentioned by you or the GTA remasters, how they are avoided like the plague. I wouldn't touch one for free.

At this point there are more video games out there than enough for a lifetime. There is no reason to ask for more every day. We aren't cats, we don't have 9 lives to be able to enjoy all of them. Let's relax and support the good stuff while avoiding and raising alarm about the bad stuff. That is enough.

@Akriel_Boulve: First of all, let me retract that statement about arrogance - I did not mean to say you're arrogant but that the way you were presenting the information sounded arrogant, probably because how strongly you feel about the topic. That is ok, emulators do have their use, so let's not turn this into an emulator bashing contest.

You hijacked this conversation and forcefully dragged it to the topic you love, and now you draw an incorrect conclusion from your own divagations. Emulators aren't the issue here. Remaster and remake bashing is. They are a true blessing if done right and the only time they can be criticized is when the developer does a lazy or poor job of it. Support good honest developers, criticize the bad lazy ones. That is all I'm saying.

The internet is most definitely not permanent.

@Akriel_Boulve: It would be interesting to read what you have to say about emulators if it wasn't for your arrogance and boundless conceit. You don't have any idea what I know and what I don't know, and your attempts to lure me into spending the rest of my life learning the ins and outs of emulators is a waste of time - I don't care about them one bit, even if I don't mind using one in my spare time.

I disagree with most of the judgements you have passed in your post, first and foremost about the ridiculous assertion that no original source code has ever been lost, but I have a serious issue with the following widespread toxic claim quoted by you: "Remakes and remasters are generally considered to be cash grabs". It's exactly this attitude that has sunk many good studios that could have produced titles which may have been considered classics today but they aren't - because they were never made. I assume you like to get paid for the work you do yet you deny that privilege to those who make the games you enjoy playing in your spare time. Why does it hurt so much that a company that makes something you like gets rewarded for their effort? They're not stealing from you. They spend time and money to make a modern version of something they created years ago that anyone with modern hardware can enjoy today without turning their home into a computer lab. They are fixing bugs that were in the original version and including all DLC. You and others who share your stance are sawing off the branch you're sitting on. Go ahead, punish the baker that bakes the bread you eat every day because today's loaf looks just like the one he made yesterday.

They did not tap may wallet for the 3 versions of the Shadow of the Colossus. I gave the money to them willingly to show my appreciation for the work they've done. I don't have to run the PS2 version through 20 different emulators to make it look decent. I can deposit the disc in the trash without feeling I'm losing anything because I have the superior PS3 and PS4 versions. The same can be said about Dead Space, Demon's Souls and others.

Let's end on this note: we both like remakes and remasters, I just like them more than you. New good IPs are nice but they don't lie around waiting to be picked up and they cost a lot. I'm wondering if you had lots of money would you invest it in a brand new IP, with nothing to guarantee success but your instinct?

@ChrisAnetkaC: it's Nintendo's intellectual property. I'm all for it but, unfortunately, they are not. I'd love to play Tears of the Kingdom on the PS5

Hopefully this will change in the future. Some Nintendo exclusives are making their way to other platforms so hopefully this game will join them one day. Better sooner than later.

Sounds like another remaster done right. Another game saved from extinction. Congratulations to the team who worked on it but how about a port to other platforms?
