"We demonstrated the real-time nature of the demo after the press conference (thanks to our friends at Pioneer with awesome audio-video assistance) to a small group of reporters, so we'll wait and see what their judgment on the presentation was, but you should feel free to make your own.
The trailer was built to have minimum impact on the development process, and while it required long hours and hard work from many, many Bungie staffers, it utilizes real-game assets, fiction and locations from parts of the "real" game."
6 months later bungie released the screen shot above.
Above is a screenshot taken from the CGI commercial that was released 1 month later.

"The commercial is a mix of CG and Live Action. It is not supposed to represent gameplay. It is supposed to show pure action from the Halo universe. Think of it like the Graphic Novel. It was made by Hollywood effects house, Digital Domain.Digital Domain did base its stuff on our in-game 3D models."
7 months after that we had our next glimpse of the near final build of the game at e3 2007
There were also many people or haters...whatever you'd want to call them that felt that this was a downgrade from the e3 2006 representation of the game.
So to put out some of the fires Bungie addressed the concerns on their weekly updates.

"Then there was the complaint that it was different than the model shown at E3 06. Well it was, but only in that we replaced the "concrete" hammered finish texture with a flatter metal version that the artists here preferred, and was more akin to the previous iterations of the Spartan MJOLNIR metal. Otherwise the model is identical. It's literally the same geometry."
And this is basically what it looks like now. 3 years after it's release.
And NOW onto Halo Reach =]
I hope this postclarified any confusion anyone may have had...
