No skill stick... back to the basics.

Coming from the 2K series, I really found something... desirable about NHL 06's skill stick. Even though it lacked any uniqueness, it did give the player (the user) a little something to rub into your brother's/friend's face. However, in NHL 07, the skill stick is gone (but you can enjoy the superfluous passing with the right thumb stick!) and all you're left with is a left thumb stick for moving the stick left and right, auto deke, and the standard wrist/slap shot. Which ultimately brings me back to the 2K series with its standard shooting and scoring. While it was fun when it first came out, now... it seems like a step backward. The game play seems to be exactly as the same as '06. The only noticeable difference is the goalie seems to be more fluid and less choppy. But beside that, there's not much else that '07 can glorify. The hitting system seems to be a bit weaker where it looks like a hit was more of an accidental bump into another player. The passing system is a little quicker with the varying saucer pass. Possibly too quick where it seems like the players are super-human (making every pass accurate and fast). Like most sports games, NHL 07 looks like a re-hash of its predecessor carrying the same modes (with 1 added "Mini Shoot Out" which seems useless since "Free For All" practically covers it's functionality) and overall the same game play (nothing really screams, "I have to play this game"). To synthesize all of the above, if you're looking for a game with the standard pass and shoot with little or no deking, then you've found the game for you. However, if you're like me, and like to break out those cool moves to show off what you can't do in a real game, then you might want to invest in the 360 version or go back to NHL 06.
