Nexus TK was the greatest mmorpg in its prime, but it shows its age.

Nine years after Nexus’ North American debut, you’ll quickly notice how old it has become. Despite a futile attempt at bringing the game to high-res it still doesn’t cut it. Even games such as Maple Story present higher quality graphics. Part of the problem is the technology that the company runs the game off of. The game is run on pretty much the same equipment it has for the past number of years, and because of this the company is limited to how they can continue to develop the franchise.

In this manner, the content that the community occasionally receives is usually a re-cache of the same things over and over again. Community events seem limited to pirates, and mines, and original community events are rare. This isn’t to say that it was always this way, but unfortunately the game has turned in this direction in its later life, and hasn’t changed much since the Kru Interactive succeeded Nexon USA. There is the possibility that things might change in the future, but for that to happen Kru needs to migrate their servers to updated technology, and give the game a major over-haul.

The company could also tear a page from the books of SCEA, Blizzard, and Maxis. Nexus was original, 9 years ago, but in order to stay on top in an ever advancing industry you need to continue to provide something you can’t find anywhere else. Sadly the “communal” feeling that most claim to be the soul and back bone of the game isn’t really there. The community is really no different from any other online gaming community. The game is set up in a manner which allows for better role play possibilities, however role play on Nexus isn’t enforced like it is on its sister game Dark Ages. Nexus really contradicts itself, and does so often in such a manner.

As far as gameplay and such, the leveling grind is insanely easy, as unlike many other games which inhibit the ability of high level characters to leech low level characters, Nexus has no restrictions, and it isn’t unlikely for a person to go from 1-Ilsan (“end game content”) in a week if leeched a lot. The game is rather unbalanced, and people in each sub-path will whine uncontrollably as to how their path functions. Unfortunately Kru doesn’t seem to know how to balance paths while keeping them different and original. The graphics as pre-stated are sub-par at best due to aging technology, and a company that is a bit out of the loop. Sound is horrid, I’m not sure of anyone who plays the game with sound on. Go into any high level cave and start hitting things in mass quantities, and soon your ears are begging for you to puncture them with a q-tip.

There is a crafting system in place, unfortunately the company is at a loss as to how to make the system functional, and yet not easily exploited by botters. The grind for such crafting is insane, and if you thought Lineage 2 had a horrible grind, wait until you try this. On the same note, the game is easily exploited, the company does not use any protective soft wear like game guard, that other companies use to protect the game. People don’t even need to know how to hack to cause mass mayhem within the game, and it is unfortunate, because the game is abused often because of this.

All in all, the game really shows its wrinkles now that it’s aged so much. With a little TLC and different payment options, it might actually be worth something. But as is, it’s best to stay away, lest your already addicted.
