the NARCs are coming. Busts, bullets, and...missiles?

User Rating: 9 | NARC NES
NARC is an instantly addictive game that still holds up, especially in the arcade. You take the role of Max or Hit-man, blue or red, and then you hit the streets to take care of crooks and traffickers, clowns, juiced-up beefcakes, maniacs and even guys in wheel chairs. Yes everyone and their dog is free for the shooting, although you can rake up a tonne of points for busting them too.
Your weapons have a limited supply, missiles run out, but bullets just slow right down from a steady stream to single shots, so you do have to use some discression on what gets blown away and who gets arrested. The levels progess with KEYCARDS you must obtain from an enemy someplace in the level, usually near the end, its the only way to move on, which can be a bummer, but it adds a little substance to the game too.

The graphics hold their own, even when you get the car, although it's rather basic, it's still not terrible. (a neat trick is to repeatedly hammer on SELECT while driving to start stunting as you drive, swinging your ride around into whatever is on the road.

The music is decent fro the most part, not too impressive, but it gets drown out easily by the action anyways so if you really don't like a level's score, just shoot more and you won't even hear it.

The Boss battle against MR. BIG is increbily typical of the era. All games had a massive and obscene boss, a giant head on wheel that blows to different stages of gruesome is only fitting. The final showdown is cheesy, but not anti-climatic. It's especially gratifying to see MR.BIG pop in the arcades, or on the MIDWAY CLASSICS disc for last gen systems.
