If you want to kick ass in 2D, you need look no further than Mortal Kombat 9. It has good graphics, many characters to choose from, tons of combos to learn, a lot of arenas and different game modes, both on- and offline. What severely detracts from the experience is, in single player, the long cutscenes that cannot be skipped, and, in multiplayer, the frequent lag that isn't always visually noticeable, but prevents the controls from responding properly, leading to a lot of frustration. Minor gripes include unrealistic fatalities (can you really tear someone cleanly in half with your legs, even if you posses the required strength?) and ridiculously oversexualized female characters (who wears high heels into battle?) Other than that, it's a great game that currently has no peers, with the exception of Injustice.
