Tactical Espianoge Show Your True Skills
In 1998 I caught word of a game called Metal Gear Solid, and it was accompanied by the words Tactical Espionage. At the time I was big on playing demos and in one magazine they had a disc containing the demo. I popped it in and wow it was fantastic, I was greeted by a beeping sound so I pressed the select button. Right there was a man who looked like the Major from Rambo named Colonel Campbell and I was given a mission objective. I set out right away with the ability to crawl through areas, be able to subdue personal without killing them even though hehe I could not help it. I ran up to the elevator and be greeted by another beep given info meeting the techie Mei Ling, Master Miller and the good doctor Naomi, I had backup in a way. I proceeded forward and was treated to a scene with a helicopter lifting off, and a bunch of guards. I continued forward and all a sudden an alert screen popped up hmm the cameras actually work I see. With a hail of gunfire I ran and hid under a truck until the cost was clear. I proceeded onward into the game demo. Going into a secured armory, and into a holding area I came to a point where I could finish my objective and the demo was done.
“Time to bring the pain” were my thoughts as I went and bought my copy. I ran through the initial mission and was faced with a huge resounding hint of glee. Then I picked up where I left off with the Darpa Chief, and wow “this is going to take a lot of work” were my thoughts. The chief dies of what appears to be a heart attack and it is unclear as to why. As Snake meet a valuable ally in Meryl Campbell niece Snake progress to the wonderful cinema that is Metal Gear Solid.
That moment on I was flung into the drama, the betrayals the twists that metal gear had to offer. It had the great things a video game should have, a compelling story one to protect the world from nuclear obliteration. It had the drama with the betrayals by Snakes comrades, and the lack of consistency with the information. One of my favorites was the mischief making a guard walk helplessly into a claymore mine gave me seizures of glee. The bosses were sensational each with a motive a story, and an awesome ability truly worthy of Fox-Hound Service. Sniper Wolf beautiful and deadly, Vulcan Raven Giant and Shaman, Psycho Mantis a power user of psycho kinesis, Decoy Octopus a master of Disguises, Revolver Ocelot a formidable gun fighter, and torture expert, and the Leader Liquid Snake identical look and abilities as Solid snake our hero. Every battle was a war with the Bosses with there great arsenal to dispose of us for a lot of them Snake literally have to become their counterpart to beat them out sniping Wolf, or out gunning Ocelot.
After the first battle with Ocelot Snake see a ninja that professes to be like Snake and has no name after taking Ocelots hand he moves on in a fit of madness and goes stealth. After the battle Snake meets the president of arms tech he promptly dies of what appears to be a heart attack. This is the same way the Darpa Chief died to suspicious however with no explanation Snake has to move on. Snake blasts his way through a tank driven by the huge Vulcan Raven, and goes to the weapons facility.
Snake come to meet up with Hal Emmerich in the weapons facility, but interrupted by the ninja from earlier he wishes to fight to end the pain, and snake defeats him. Snake speaks with Otacon and with a funny situation asking if he is all right especially after all the heart attacks happening Hal or Otacon as he likes to be called dismisses it as snake being weird. Otacon provides some love interest for Sniper Wolf. It makes a compelling plot pull when Snake will eventually to kill her.
Snake meets up with Meryl and they go to proceed to the second part of the base however Mantis awaits them. He controls Meryl telling Snake to make love to her she holds a gun and snake puts her out. Mantis comes out, and battles snake using a sneaky ability Snake makes it so Mantis cannot read him with his abilities useless he falls to Snake. Mantis tells snake of the curse of his abilities and why he wears a mask. He tells snake that him and liquid are not like regular people no past no future they live in the moment. Mantis dies with his thoughts as he has snake put his mask back on.
As they proceed they come to an open corridor and Meryl is shot, Snake knows it must be Wolf, and that is a trap. Snake hurries back to the armory and grabs a rifle to fight her. As he returns Meryl is gone and Wolf is waiting Snake out shoots her, but is then captured as he goes to check the body. Wolf greets him and looks him over, and gives him her mark; he is all she will think about till he is dead. All this drama comes to head when snake is captured and put on the torture rack. If Snake submit Meryl dies, if Snake cannot hold out Snake die there are no continues here my friend. With an escape worthy of Houdini who would have thought Ketchup worked so well, Snake are thrust back into the mission. Now is the time to take down the Fox unit. Snake battle a Helicopter flown by liquid that has got Snake outgunned, and cut-off, but with stinger missiles Snake overcome it. In the deadly battle of sniper vs. sniper Snake kill of Wolf, and hear her tragic tale. She was a person who overcame the adversities of her people, and used her experiences of war to watch it through a scope. Otacon professes his love to Wolf, as she lies dying, with a shot to her head Snake sets the Wolf free.
Onward Snake goes into the base, coming down to a freezing chamber where the giant Raven meets him. With a James bond quip Snake nudges at how a Big Boy like Raven fit in that tank earlier. Vulcan carries a Chain gun meant for F-16’s and he holds it with no trouble he tells Snake they must battle. With cleverly placed claymores, c4, and nikita missiles Raven is put down. After telling snake a secret about the Darpa Chief, and has the ravens return his body to the earth via consumption.
Snake still presses on and finally sees Metal Gear the giant Apparatus that is a walking Nuclear Tank. Going to the control room snake uses a special Pal key given my arms tech president baker. Snake over hears that Liquid wishes to fortify the base, and have Colonel Gurlukovich and his troops to support them they’d make the base outer heaven Big Boss’s dream. Snake tries to get his keys to work but must have one cold hot and normal with ingenuity he manages the task. Only to be met with a surprise and that is that he actually activated the Rex, and the warheads capability to fire. Snake gets a call from Master Miller thanking him for his work, the Darpa chief was actually killed, and Decoy Died of an apparent heart attack by the Fox Die Virus. Then Reveals himself to be Liquid and hopes snake a pleasant death. Snake gets encompassed with gas, but Otacon opens the locked door and snake escapes. Liquid hops in Rex and a battle ensues, using the stinger Snake tries to cripple it while evading it’s attack. The cyber ninja shows, up and so everyone knows his name is Frank Jaeger or Grey Fox Snakes friend, and former ally/enemy. The only member of Fox hound to get the name Fox he hold true to his abilities and cripples the Rex. Liquid kills, Fox, and Snake destroys the Rex.
After the explosion Snake awakes to see Liquid and Meryl bound up. Liquid tells of the Les Enfant Terribles project and how they are clones of Big Boss the legendary soldier. He explains the soldiers on base as the genome army that were given genetic treatment of that of Big Boss as well. He tells of the Fox Die virus and how Naomi changed it last minute so he was not sure of the effect but as long snake lived he would be fine. Solid asks what this is really about and Liquid tells him of how he was robbed of his birth right getting all of Boss’s recessive genes making Solid the Dominant one. After Liquids melodrama he wishes a fight with Snake. Snake calls Campbell who says there is an air strike in effect to wipe out the base. The secretary of defense comes over Campbell, and wishes Snake a pleasant death since they must cover up the incident. Setting a bomb for 3 minutes Solid must defeat his brother and save Meryl who lies helpless at the side. Snake manages to defeat Liquid, and he runs over to Meryl. Meryl is still alive, and they go to escape the base before its too late. They hop in a jeep and Otacon calls saying he will clear they way. Snake warns him of the strike but Otacon says he need sot do it or they wont escape. As they drive out killing the guards Liquid is in pursuit. Shooting down liquid they come to the daylight, and they both crash. Liquid gets up and comes to Solid with gun in hand at that moment Liquids heart aches he yells out “Fox”, and Solid says out “Die” with that Liquid falls over dead. Campbell calls and ask how Meryl is, and says that the strike is called off, and the Secretary is id custody. Snake saved them again and says that he left some transportation for them to use. Snake says his name is David and he and Meryl Ride off into the Alaskan sun light.
After word we hear Ocelot talking to an unknown person telling about Fox Die and how Solid was the inferior one not Liquid. He says they are keeping surveillance on them, and he will see to it.
“Thank you, and good bye Mr. President.”
