Good Bloody fun, but not worth US$60, look for US$40 or less.

User Rating: 5.5 | Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance X360
Immersion: Revengeance is a third person action game (TPA). As such it needs to emotionally involve the player in the character first, and the environment second. MGR:Revengeance doesn't involve the player so much in the character, as it involves the player in the combat, which is emotionally involving in a cathartic and spectacle way. The environment is not uninteresting, but it is mostly notable for being destructible. Sound is largely un-intrusive, swords don't report when blocking, and guns don't either. The main character is not silent, and neither are enemies, it would help if there were more clings and clangs. Still, the deliberate audio "boss music" works. There are no collectible audio logs. The game attempts to involve players in the character with telephone messages accessible after missions or in missions. This unfortunately means not slicing up enemies into giblets for a while. Menus are laid out in an organic way, i.e. they feel part of the world, not shoehorned in. Overall, 8/15 average, but more good here than bad.

Difficulty: The camera plays into the difficulty at times in boss fights. Nothing really too problematic difficulty-wise, more options would be nice, but not required. Game provides tutorials in the form of VR missions, which are a welcome addition as they allow players to practice. 9/15, camera is a minor concern but overall, good.

Lasting Appeal: Its use as a stress reliever helps out here. It can be played in short bursts, and then put aside. Playing straight through is not recommended with a game like this. A difficult one to rate objectively. Having to play the game in a specific way to garner enjoyment long term is a negative, but the PDF (pure dumb fun) and Catharsis factor boost it. 8/15 As a game it is a short quest game, worth one playthrough. However, one cannot ignore the catharsis generated by vivisecting and quartering a video game dude. That and the availability of more than one mode helps push it up.

Overall: 8/15, average but with slightly more good than bad. A good budget equivalent is Warhammer 40K Space Marine, which occupies the same blood and gore cathartic space, but lacks the sheer scale and modes of spectacle of MGR: Revengeance.
